Mountain Comprehensive Care Center and MCCC's HomePlace Clinic are proud to celebrate Dr. Seema Sachdeva of the HomePlace Clinic for Children & Families in Pikeville, Kentucky!

Dr. Seema Sachdeva, M.D., FAAP, was honored as this year’s John A. Strosnider, D.O., Memorial Lecturer at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) Founders Dinner. This prestigious recognition highlights her decades of service as a physician, educator, and advocate for children across Eastern Kentucky.

A board-certified pediatrician with specialized training in pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. Sachdeva has cared for children and families in the mountains for more than 30 years. As the founding vice-chair of KYCOM’s Division of Pediatrics and a clinical professor of pediatrics, she has shaped the education of future physicians while providing compassionate, expert care.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Sachdeva’s impact extends deep into the community. She has been recognized as a CDC Childhood Immunization Champion, Child Abuse Prevention Advocate of the Year, and co-founder of the Empowering Girls of Appalachia initiative, helping to uplift and strengthen families throughout the region.

We are grateful to KYCOM for honoring Dr. Seema Sachdeva and shining a light on the extraordinary difference she continues to make in the lives of children, families, and communities across Central Appalachia.

Understanding ADHD vs. Child Traumatic Stress

It can be difficult to tell the difference between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Child Traumatic Stress (CTS). Both can affect a child’s focus, behavior, and emotions—and sometimes symptoms overlap. This makes it harder to understand what a child is really experiencing. A trauma-informed approach is essential to ensure children get the right kind of care and support.

ADHD Symptoms Might Look Like:
• Trouble sustaining attention
• Difficulty following directions
• Constant fidgeting or restlessness
• Talking excessively
• Frequently losing things
• Interrupting others

Child Traumatic Stress Symptoms Might Look Like:
• Intense feelings of fear, shame, or vulnerability
• Avoiding reminders of trauma
• Irritability or anger outbursts
• Dissociation or “checking out”
• Constant sense of threat or danger
• Risk-taking or self-destructive behavior

Both ADHD and CTS May Include:
• Difficulty concentrating or learning in school
• Being easily distracted
• Emotional reactivity
• Disorganization
• Trouble sleeping

Because ADHD and trauma can coexist, symptoms may appear stronger or more complicated. Recognizing the difference—and the overlap—helps providers, families, and educators respond with effective, trauma-informed care.

Understanding Child Trauma: Acute, Chronic, and Complex
Every child responds to trauma differently. What may feel overwhelming for one child might not affect another the same way. Trauma can result from a single event, repeated stress, or ongoing harm—sometimes even from those a child trusts most. Recognizing these experiences helps caregivers, educators, and providers respond with the right kind of support.

Acute Trauma is the result of a single distressing event, such as an accident, natural disaster, or act of violence.

Chronic Trauma develops from repeated or ongoing exposure to harmful situations, like bullying, racism, or community violence.

Complex Trauma comes from repeated, often interpersonal harm early in life, such as abuse, neglect, or witnessing violence.

Understanding the difference between these types of trauma helps families and providers recognize the lasting impact on children and offer appropriate, trauma-informed care.
