Provident Hospital in Chicago, founded by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams in 1891, was the first Black-owned and operated hospital in the U.S.
It provided life-saving care to Black patients who were often denied treatment elsewhere and trained Black medical professionals when opportunities were scarce.
