The mortal remains of Philadelphia's Monument Cemetery. The second Victorian garden cemetery established in the city after Laurel Hill (1839). Originally called Pere-Lachaise, after the first ever rural garden cemetery in Paris, it was renamed Monument Cemetery. In 1956, it was destroyed by Temple University and the City of Philadelphia; all the monuments and headstones were dumped into the Delaware River (under what is now the Betsy Ross Bridge).

My photo shows what the embankment looks like after you've climbed down twelve feet of granite grave markers. 28,000 people were buried here, and I don't know how many markers were removed to the river.

On my third trip to the site, I transcribed all the names and dates I could read off upright headstones and added them to the "FindAGrave.com" site. You can read these 25 or so names on the blog I posted: http://thecemeterytraveler.blogspot.com/2012/03/beachcombing-in-hell-gravestones-of.html
