If you’ve ever wondered why Rainy Lake Medical Center doesn’t use a lead shield during x-rays, mammograms or other procedures, it’s because we follow guidelines from the American College of Radiology (ACR) along with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), that advise against the routine use of patient shielding.

Why?
▪ Minimal Benefit: Studies have shown that patient shielding provides very little to no benefit in terms of radiation dose reduction, and in some cases, it can even compromise image quality, potentially requiring repeat scans.
▪ Advancements in Technology: RLMC's state-of-the-art imaging equipment is designed to use low doses of radiation. The risks associated with lead shielding can sometimes outweigh the benefits, as it can interfere with automatic exposure techniques, leading to obscured findings and potentially greater risk from scatter radiation.
▪ Focus on Image Quality: The primary goal of medical imaging is to obtain a clear, diagnostic-quality image, and shielding can interfere with that process.

Happy Siblings Day to Kate and Tara, Rainy Lake Medical Center’s hospital pharmacists. With a combined total of 29 years at RLMC, Kate and Tara work daily to deliver high-quality care to our patients in all areas of the hospital. From delivering life-saving medications to patients in our emergency department to mixing medications for our chemotherapy and infusion center, Kate and Tara are a critical part of the RLMC team, and we're so grateful for them.
