Grace changes us. To feel yourself changing or desiring to change may be the (sometimes painful) prod of grace. When you decide to make the courageous jump into counseling, you may just be jumping into the dance of grace. It's a hard, unnatural dance. And you need a dance partner!

This is the question the Psalms keep asking us—it draws out the places where we’ve put our trust in something other than the Lord. Our escapes, our go-to comforts, the things we run to when life feels heavy—these are often where false securities show up. A lot of what we call “addiction” actually make more sense when we see them this way: as responses to stress or pain that end up substituting for true refuge in God.

This is one of those beautifully practical actions you can take in the midst of your anxiety.

The psalmist, in obvious turmoil, actively speaks to his own heart. He reminds his heart of the truth, encouraging it to put its hope in God.

If your anxiety debilitates you, then it's important to look outside of yourself (e.g., the church, counseling, trusted friends/family) in order to be reminded of the truth.

No, it's a place that invites compassion to have a say in your life -- the kind of compassion, like Nouwen articulates, that asks you to enter into your pain (not away from it).

This Christmas lullaby, written by Isaac Watts in the mid-1700s, imagines Mary singing to her infant son, Jesus. It's a beautiful reminder of the comfort and protection that God provides you. Take hope! And rest.

In the "Bastogne" episode of Band of Brothers, the soldiers of Easy Company are entrenched in the brutal cold and chaos of the Battle of the Bulge. In a quiet, brief moment -- when the fighting has ceased -- the German soldiers, also caught in the brutal conditions of the winter siege, begin to sing Christmas carols from their trenches. For a brief moment, in the midnight clear, the sound of their voices floats over the snow-covered fields, uniting men on both sides in an oddly beautiful experience of longing, grief, and the hope that peace might one day be possible.

Deep down, you, like the soldiers, are longing for the day when your voice joins the angels in rejoicing over the ultimate peace of God. No more war. No more pain and suffering. No more grief. Take hope! Christ hears your longing voice today!
