Small businesses play an important role as job creators and are a pillar in communities nationwide. More than 4 million small business owners purchase healthcare coverage on their own and rely on Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) to keep premiums affordable.

But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025. Many small businesses may face increased costs or be forced to reduce or eliminate employee health coverage.

Citrus County is currently under an Extreme Heating Warning. This afternoon's heat index will range from 108° to 118°, making it critical to take extra precautions.

Please take the following precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones:

✅ Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
✅ Avoid strenuous activity outdoors this afternoon – If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade.
✅ Use air conditioning – Fans alone may not provide enough relief.
✅ Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing – It helps your body stay cooler.

🚨 Know the warning signs of heat-related illness.

Heat Exhaustion signs include heavy sweating, weakness or dizziness, nausea or vomiting, headache, and cool pale skin.

Heat Stroke (a medical emergency) signs include hot dry skin, confusion or altered mental state, rapid pulse, fainting, body temperature above 103°F

📞 If you or someone around you shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move them to a cooler place.

Stay cool, stay safe and check in on neighbors, pets, and loved ones.

Today, we're proud to recognize Andrew Grivois and Robert Urling of Citrus County Fire Rescue for an extraordinary save.

When a patient became overheated while working in their yard, Rescue 8 arrived to find them in clear distress. Despite the patient’s initial refusal to be transported, Andrew and Robert didn’t give up. They calmly and persistently explained the seriousness of the situation, ultimately convincing the patient to go with them.

Thanks to their quick thinking and refusal to walk away, the patient was declared a STEMI alert en route and arrived at the HCA Florida Citrus Hospital ER where they were whisked up to the cath lab to receive life-saving treatment for a 100% blockage in a major coronary artery.

Today, that patient is on the road to recovery, all because two first responders didn't give up.

Please join us in honoring Andrew and Robert for being true Heroes in Action!

Clinical Nurse Coordinator Lakesha Harrison’s volunteer journey is deeply personal and powerfully impactful. In memory of her son, Antonio Hicks, she supports the Citrus County Education Foundation and helped launch the Antonio Hicks Scholarship Foundation. Her advocacy helped make Florida the first state to require EKGs for student athletes, saving lives and honoring Antonio’s legacy.

She also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and the Citrus County School District, giving her time, energy, and heart to causes that uplift others.

“Whatever I can do to help someone, I will. Paying it forward without wanting anything in return,” said Lakesha about the reason she volunteers.

Migraine or stroke? Knowing the difference could save your life.

While migraines affect 1 in 4 U.S. households according to the American Migraine Foundation some symptoms like vision changes or intense head pain can mimic a stroke.

Dr. Keith DeSousa, an interventional neurologist with HCA Florida Healthcare, shares that symptoms can sometimes be misleading and explains why understanding the distinction is critical: https://www.hcafloridahealthcare.com/healthy-living/blog/migraine-or-stroke-how-to-tell-the-difference.

Join us for a cancer survivorship seminar on Tuesday, August 26 at 2pm at the Citrus County YMCA.

“Maintaining Optimal Nutrition” will be guided by Registered Dietitian Deb Gaviria. Many healthy and nutritious foods help maintain nutritional status and can be modified and prepared to accommodate poor appetite, taste changes, and prevention of weight loss. After cancer treatment, many side effects may go away, making it easier to eat and maintain a healthy weight. Eating a healthy diet helps with regaining strength and reduces the risk of cancer recurring. Gaviria will discuss improving health and reducing cancer risk with proper nutrition as well as how to maintain good nutritional intake before, during and after cancer treatment.

Cancer survivorship begins at diagnosis and refers to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, no matter where they are in the course of their disease. All are welcome to attend. Seating is limited so an RSVP is required: https://bit.ly/4lLML3N

Thank you to everyone who joined us today at the Citrus County YMCA for an informative orthopedic seminar with Dr. Constantine Toumbis!

Dr. Toumbis shared valuable insights on osteoporosis, a condition that affects 1 in 5 women and more than 1 in 20 men over 50. Attendees learned how to assess their risk, take proactive steps to strengthen bones, and prevent fractures before they happen. The group also talked about compression fractures, a serious consequence of untreated osteoporosis, and how early detection and treatment can make a life-changing difference. A lively Q&A session followed, giving participants the chance to ask questions and get expert advice.

We’re proud to partner with the YMCA to bring important health education to our community. Stay tuned for more upcoming seminars and events focused on helping you live your healthiest life!

Today we recognized Sumter County Fire & EMS Station 21 in another powerful example of what happens when we work together to save a life. Recently, a patient arrived at our facility via Sumter 33 as a STEMI alert that required immediate intervention.

Thanks to quick coordination between first responders and our emergency room, the patient was quickly taken to the cardiac cath lab where the cardiologist discovered a 100% blockage in a major coronary artery. A stent was placed using balloon angioplasty, restoring full blood flow with excellent results.

Following the procedure, the patient was closely monitored in the ICU, then safely downgraded just two days later, and discharged home without incident.

Today, we honored the outstanding work of the Sumter 33/21 team Adam Langley, Alexander Hendrickson, Norman Young, and Kevin Moore for their critical role in this life-saving chain of care. Their rapid response and clinical precision exemplify the very best of what it means to be a Hero in Action.

One in eight people, and one in six children, in North Florida live in households that may be food insecure, which means not having enough nutritious food to have an active, healthy life.

At HCA Florida Healthcare we care committed to to fighting food insecurity. Recently, HCA Florida Capital Hospital presented a $15,000 donation to Second Harvest of the Big Bend to help provide food to families experiencing hunger, bringing the total to $23,000 since 2023.

The financial support is part of a broader effort that has included more than 250 colleagues from HCA Florida Healthcare volunteering at the Second Harvest of the Big Bend over the past two years to help sort and pack food donations.

“We’re honored to support Second Harvest with a financial gift, as well as the service of our dedicated volunteers throughout the year,” said Dale Neely, chief executive officer, HCA Florida Capital Hospital.

At HCA Florida Healthcare, we commit every day to creating healthier tomorrows — dedicating our time, expertise and resources to help others. Learn more about HCA Florida Healthcare's dedication to meeting the needs of our communities: https://bit.ly/44U3xGN.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the arms or legs. It’s easy to mistake PAD for other conditions like hip arthritis or spinal stenosis, which means often goes undiagnosed. Many people with PAD don’t experience symptoms at all. That’s why awareness of risk factors – such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking – is crucial for screening.

Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward timely intervention and better quality of life. In most cases, lifestyle changes, exercise and medications are enough to slow the progression or even reverse the symptoms of PAD, so talk to your doctor if you think you may be at risk.
