What should I know about emphysema?

Emphysema is one of the two kinds of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema makes it difficult for a patient to breathe normally, and it worsens over time. Also, it's common for people with emphysema to have the other kind of COPD, chronic bronchitis, as well. Because emphysema worsens over time, it's important to manage it properly and professionally.

You or a person you care about may have gotten emphysema after long-term exposure to irritants that damage the lungs and airway. In the U.S., cigarette smoke is the most common cause of the condition, but it's also common for pipe smoke, cigar smoke, or another type of to***co smoke to cause emphysema. Also, it's possible for secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, or certain dusts to cause emphysema. Genetics and age can be factors too.

There is no cure for emphysema. The symptoms of emphysema can be severe or mild, and in many cases, they can be managed and treated with professional assistance. A patient can still have a healthy life.

What are occupational lung diseases?

Occupational lung diseases are work-related lung conditions caused or worsened by certain irritants found in some workplaces. Mining coal or working in a car garage or textile factory may lead to occupational lung disease. If the disease isn't diagnosed and treated professionally, it could lead to severe, long-term health issues.

According to the American Lung Association, occupational lung diseases are the primary cause of occupation-related illness in the U.S. Also, the association says that smoking can increase the severity of an occupational lung disease. The disease requires professional attention and the symptoms cannot be managed sufficiently alone.

What is COPD?

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a term used to describe a group of lung diseases. These diseases make it difficult for a patient to breathe, and they worsen over time. There are two kinds of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Actually, most COPD patients have both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, but the severity of each can differ between patients.

Typically, it's long-term exposure to damaging irritants that causes COPD. In the U.S., the main cause of COPD is cigarette smoke, but cigar, pipe, and other kinds of to***co smoke can also cause COPD. It's also possible for secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, or dusts to contribute to the condition. Age and genetics are possible factors too.

What is bronchiectasis?

Bronchiectasis is a condition that occurs when there's damage to a person's airway that makes it widen and become flabby and scarred. Sometimes an infection is what causes the condition, like whooping cough or the measles, while other times the condition is caused by another condition like cystic fibrosis or PCD.

Bronchiectasis can lead to serious lung damage, lung infections, and even some severe, possibly fatal health problems like respiratory failure or heart failure. This is why it's so important to treat the condition early. Although there is no cure for bronchiectasis, with proper and professional care, a patient can have good quality of life.

How Does Pediatrics Differ from Adult Care?

Pediatrics differs from adult medicine in quite a few ways. The smaller body of the infant or child has a substantially different physiology from that of a full grown adult. Treating a child is not like treating a small adult, especially since their bodies are changing and growing continuously. Congenital defects, genetic differences, and developmental issues are more of a concern to pediatricians than they are to physicians who take care of adults. Children also cannot make decisions for themselves and often do not understand and can't understand what is going on inside their bodies and because of this, pediatricians have to be specially trained to communicate with children and their parents.

What is a Pediatrician?

A pediatrician is a doctor who treats and works with children. They provide preventative medicine and medical care for children who are ill or dealing with a chronic condition. They are concerned with the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of the children they treat. They will work with their patients as they progress through each stage of development and address any issues which may arise during that time. Pediatricians focus on infants and children through age 21 and will help them to foster healthy lifestyle habits.

Do you have asthma?

Asthma is medically defined as airway obstruction that can be reversed with medications. What symptoms do patients suffer from? Most people associate asthma with wheezing, severe shortness of breath and constant utilization of inhalers. The vast majority of patients never suffer from severe asthma on a constant basis but may have periodic attacks. Asthma symptoms may consist of cough when exercising, when laughing or when exposed to certain substances, shortness of breath, wheezing, inability to catch a full breath or becoming winded easily. Symptoms can range from extremely mild to life-threatening.

- The number of people with asthma continues to increase with about 1 out of every 12 persons in the United States suffering from asthma, or about 25-30,000,000 people.
- Asthma affects children more commonly than adults, but asthma is found in all age groups.
- Asthma is very often misdiagnosed and treated as upper respiratory tract infections or recurrent "colds".

What is the fastest way to cure bronchitis?

First, if you suspect you have bronchitis, you should avoid any lung irritants like smoke and consider using a face mask outside to prevent further irritation. You can use a humidifier to ease your symptoms in the short term, but you'll want to consider getting professional treatment too. While it's true that many cases of acute bronchitis will get better on their own, urgent care can speed this up and provide relief.

Truly, urgent care is the best place to go to treat bronchitis, as they can see you right away with no appointment necessary, there are only minimal wait times, and you'll be able to speak with a specialist right away. Also, urgent care can provide the means of diagnosis, including X-rays and other tests when necessary. And, of course, urgent care can treat bronchitis too.
