Lung cancer is the top cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., yet a majority of eligible patients don't get screened.

Dr. Timothy Saettele, a Saint Luke’s interventional pulmonologist, appeared on Health News You Can Use to walk through who should get screened, low-dose CT scans, and next steps.

Low-dose CT scans, also called Lung CTs, are available at Saint Luke's Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola and Anderson County Hospital in Garnett. Ask your provider about a referral close to home.

Congratulations to Shannon, a nurse at Allen County Regional Hospital, for being honored with the Saint Luke's Hope Award!

Saint Luke's Hope Award recognizes team members who exemplify the qualities of spirituality, integrity, and compassion in what they do and who they are. This year, Shannon was one of only 25 employees across Saint Luke's to be honored with a 2025 Hope Award during a celebration held at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City.

“She works closely with our chemotherapy patients and will go above and beyond to make sure they are comfortable and getting everything they need for their treatment," Shannon's nominator said. "She will sit and listen to patients when they just need someone to talk to. Shannon is a wonderful nurse and even better person.”

Thank you, Shannon, for the care and compassion you show each day! 💙

Pat Patton, hospital administrator at Allen County Regional Hospital and Anderson County Hospital, believes personal relationships and shared values are what make living and working in rural America so rewarding. These values extend throughout the hospital and beyond.

“Being close to the staff and patients as both colleagues and neighbors is what’s special about working for rural hospitals like ours,” Pat said. “We know it promptly when folks are happy with the care they received, and also when there are opportunities to improve, and we can have conversations and resolve challenges in a better way because we are neighbors."

Pat enjoys getting acquainted with people and building relationships through his involvement in local groups and committees, and through everyday interactions out in the community.

“Our patients are more than just a number,” Pat said. “I think it is only natural that the closer you are to the folks you live around, the more you simply must care about them.”

We are grateful to Pat and all rural health care workers who make a lasting difference in the communities they proudly serve! 💙

Tina, associate chief nursing officer at Allen County Regional Hospital and Anderson County Hospital, cherishes the rural communities she serves. She is proud of the work she does and the relationships she’s able to build with team members and patients along the way.

“Rural hospitals are unique in that we must be very team-focused, but also self-reliant and resourceful,” Tina said. “Every piece of the puzzle must perform efficiently and with purpose to be successful.”

Knowing that her hospitals in Iola and Garnett are essential to the success of both communities motivates Tina each and every day.

"As health care professionals, we have a great opportunity to make an impact on the health and well-being of our communities," Tina said. "That impact is seen throughout our communities in the relationships we develop with our patients and through the services we provide that keep our patients close to home."

Today, we celebrate Tina and all those working for the success of Saint Luke's two rural hospitals in Kansas! 💙

Congratulations to Gina, a housekeeping associate at Allen County Regional Hospital, for being honored with the Saint Luke’s Sunshine Award! ☀️

The Saint Luke’s Sunshine Award honors non-clinical employees who demonstrate kindness and character, ensuring that patients receive the best possible care.

Gina was nominated several times for going above and beyond to ensure the therapy department stays clean. She takes extra time to decorate the department for each holiday, always spreading joy so that each patient has a positive experience.

“Gina has been an amazing asset to us in the therapy department,” one nomination reads. “In therapy, attitude is more than half the battle, and providing a smile or warm holiday memory by seeing her decorations keeps patients motivated. She is more than deserving of this award for her commitment to her job and workspace.”
