Horizons is thrilled to have Lily Romitti volunteering with us through the AmeriCorps Disaster PrepWise program, a project developed by the University of Iowa College of Public Health!

Lily recently graduated in May with a Master of Public Health degree from the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa. Impressively, she is now serving her fifth term with AmeriCorps DPW!

The AmeriCorps Disaster PrepWise program focuses on supporting older adults in Iowa by helping them create personalized disaster preparedness plans before an emergency occurs. Using an all-hazards approach, the program offers trainings, educational presentations, and preparedness clinics to equip individuals and households for a wide range of emergencies, including natural disasters, fires, and more.

Lily volunteers at Horizons three to four days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., contributing her time and energy to a variety of initiatives. One of her favorite roles is spending time with members at our Brownstone Congregate Dining Site—sharing meals, enjoying lively conversations, and leading interactive emergency preparedness games.

Although generations apart, there are many things that connect grandparents and grandchildren - even disaster preparedness supplies. Whether it’s a cozy quilt, a game of Slapjack, or a classic snack, small comfort items can bring families closer together. ​

Consider including timeless supplies in your emergency kits that both of you can spark memories over. You might find yourselves reminiscing over songs from your Walkman - ones they now stream. In turn, they'll show you how to play all the coolest games on their smartphone.

Last Tuesday, was brutally cold for one of our AmeriCorps members preparing meals in the walk-in freezer at Horizons: Meals on Wheels, Financial Wellness & NTS. Today, she came prepared for this unexpected extreme cold with extra layers, and hot cocoa afterwards!
