“I have been honored to lead this outstanding department for 10 years… Without your support and hard work, the department would not be the success it is.”

After a decade of extraordinary leadership, Cynthia A. Wong, MD, has shared her plans to step down as Chair and DEO in February 2026, while continuing as a faculty member. Her message reflects what has defined her tenure—gratitude, collaboration, and a deep belief in the future of the department.

As the department enters its next chapter, Archit Sharma, MBBS, MBA, will serve as interim Chair beginning March 1, 2026, while UI Health Care launches a national search for the next Chair and DEO.

We are deeply grateful for Dr. Wong’s leadership, the strong foundation she has built, and the culture of excellence she leaves behind. Wishing her continued fulfillment as she transitions and looks forward to more time with family, while remaining an invaluable part of our community. 💛🖤

From November 10–21, we’re collecting non-expired, non-perishable, and shelf-stable food items to benefit the University of Iowa Food Pantry, which provides essential resources to students, residents, fellows, and staff across campus.

Every donation—big or small—helps make a meaningful difference. Suggested items include canned fruits and vegetables, beans, soups, rice, pasta, canned meats or fish, baking and cooking mixes, baby food, and infant formula. 🥫

Donations can be dropped off in the Cullen Conference Room.

🎉 Back-to-Back Champions! 🎉

For the second year in a row, the University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia has taken first place in FAER’s national fundraising competition! 🏆

Among departments with fewer than 110 faculty, we led the nation — raising an impressive $15,845 from 29 donors, surpassing last year’s record of $12,335 from 26 donors. 💛🖤

This achievement reflects our department’s unwavering commitment to advancing anesthesia research and education.

As part of this year’s win, we’ll receive:
