SLP graduate student clinicians from the Neuro Speech and Language Team, led by Laura Schmitt M.S., CCC-SLP, recently partnered with OT students from Des Moines University and On With Life for an interprofessional lab experience focused on collaborative neurological rehabilitation. During this session, SLP and OT students worked together to complete joint screenings and design co-treatment sessions, guided by speech, physical, occupational, recreational, and music therapists from On With Life who offered valuable mentorship and shared practical therapeutic expertise. This experience gave students the opportunity to see firsthand how collaboration between disciplines enhances patient care. They gained a deeper understanding of how speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists work together to support communication, cognition, and functional independence following neurological injury.

As the 2025 ASHA convention approaches, we want to highlight our student clinicians who are presenting and making a difference! Meet Emma Mueller, a second year M.S. SLP student who will be presenting her talk at the 100th ASHA convention titled “Community-Oriented Service for Comprehensive Assessment of SSD in Children: Development/Implementation of a Sustainable Model” on Staurday, November 22nd.

“My ASHA presentation centers around the work we’re currently doing in the Speech Sensorimotor Development Lab. Through this project, our lab is providing free comprehensive assessments of speech sound production and writing detailed reports families and clinicians can use to inform intervention plans. Our goal is to increase clinicians’ direct treatment time, build undergraduate students’ clinical skills, and help families gain a deeper understanding of their child’s strengths and unique needs.”

When asked how she’s taken what she’s learned through research and applied it to the clinic, Emma shared, “Working in the SSD Lab has given me the opportunity to hone my transcription skills and build my familiarity with a variety of evaluation tools, including ultrasound imaging of the tongue! I’ve also learned so much about motor speech and speech sound production, which will be invaluable to me as I begin my career as an SLP.”

We are so proud of Emma, and we are so grateful to have her in our clinic!
