Our police department has a longstanding, collaborative relationship with the Iowa City Police Department. That support extends downtown, where people will see an immediate presence from both of our agencies. Starting this weekend, we will provide four additional police officers to conduct joint patrols with ICPD on Friday and Saturday nights during peak hours.

Our thoughts remain with those injured in the April 19 shooting downtown, as well as their families, friends, and loved ones as the investigation continues.

In the days and hours following the Sunday, April 19, 2026 shooting, Iowa City Police - assisted by numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies - have continued to investigate this incident.

INVESTIGATION UPDATE FROM ICPD (APRIL 20, 4:15 PM): Investigators are following numerous leads and have positively identified numerous persons of interest associated with this incident.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police are seeking:
• The identity of Person of Interest #3 in the attached photos.
• Any security camera footage from Downtown Iowa City businesses from 1-2:15 a.m., Sunday, April 19, 2026.
•Cell phone video recordings taken from the Pedestrian Mall during that same time period.

Update: Kalenga Byondo has been safely located. No further information is available.

The Iowa City Police Department is seeking the public's help in locating a missing person.

Kalenga Byondo, 60, was last seen leaving his home in the 1900 Block of Broadway Street at 7 a.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Byondo is 5'10", and 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing all-black clothing. Byondo has dementia.

Anyone with information on Byondo's whereabouts is asked to contact the Joint Emergency Communications Center at 319-356-6800.
