Due to public safety and the increase of community-acquired COVID-19 cases in Iowa, all therapy sessions at Shanthi Wellness will be via telehealth until further notice. At this time, I will re-evaluate this on April 3, 2020. Telehealth is provided using a HIPAA compliant platform and can be done on your laptop or through the SimplePractice App available on any smartphone through the app store. U of I Students: You must be located in a state where I am licensed in order to participate in telehealth. This would be Iowa or Minnesota.

The MoMo Challenge:
I've seen a lot of posts regarding the Momo challenge lately. Some posts say it is real while others say it is a hoax. Either way, it is important for parents to monitor what their children and teens are watching on YouTube and on various social media sites.
While social media can be a good place to socialize with friends, it is filled with people who wish to do harm to your child. Social Media sites are filled with bullies, child predators, s*x traffickers, and others wishing to cause harm to people. Please talk to your children about internet safety. Also- make sure you are monitoring your child's social media usage. Talk with your cell phone provider about parental controls. Place proper parental controls on your devices and randomly monitor device histories to see what sites your child has visited.
Stay Safe,
Dr. Rich

Shanthi Wellness has been a dream of mine for many years. I’ve spent my career working with children, teens, and adults with various mental health and behavioral issues. I’ve also taught at a few Universities and currently teach for Walden online.
I have many reasons to start Shanthi. Two of the main reasons are:
I’ve talked with many physicians, social workers, counselors, and psychologists who suffer from burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and impostor syndrome. This is what guided me to first conduct my dissertation on the topic of secondary trauma. I wanted to create a place where professionals can receive help and guidance through some of the tough issues they face everyday. The su***de rate among physicians is more than double of the general population. Physicians with depression often go untreated or under treated. They fear getting help for their mood disorders because of the stigma and the possibility of losing their license. Also, most counseling practices are only open from 9 - 5 pm. This makes it difficult for professionals to get away. For this, I offer both in-office and video sessions. I will do my best to provide services to professionals that fit your busy schedules.
I also wanted to help people through their weight loss journey. A few years ago, I was a bariatric patient. I underwent the sleeve gastrectomy a few years ago and have lost 135 lbs. A couple of years ago, I was talking to the nurse, PA and my surgeon at the University of Iowa Center for Digestive Diseases and offered my services. At the time, I was a counselor in South East Iowa, and have conducted many assessments for surgery and have provided ongoing counseling for those going through the process. I am currently working on my certification as a bariatric counselor.
While those were the main two reasons for starting Shanthi, I want everyone to know that I am a mental heath general practitioner . I work with all treatment issues and love working with both kids and adults from ages 11+.
