Treating patients like family is always a priority for nurse manager Taylor Eisenberg, BSN, RN, and her nursing team at our North Liberty campus. That philosophy went a bit further recently when one of their patients actually was family.

When the mother of a nurse on Taylor’s team needed surgery, Taylor’s husband, Josh Eisenberg, MD, was her orthopedic surgeon. The mother then became an inpatient on Taylor’s floor.

“Being able to care for the patient alongside my team was an honor and a privilege,” Taylor says. “Every patient we serve deserves to feel supported, safe, and truly cared for, but this experience carried an extra layer of meaning. Watching our staff rally around not only one of our own, but also her family, reinforced what makes this place special.”

As one of her patients neared the end of their life, DAISY Award recipient, Libby Scott, BSN, RN, helped them share one final peaceful moment with their family by taking them to the Rooftop Terrace to watch the sunset together. That quiet evening became the patient’s last memory, and a moment Scott and the family will never forget. 💛

Researchers at University of Iowa are uncovering the complex pathways that regulate fat metabolism — and revealing new targets for treating metabolic diseases.

From mapping how the liver makes and stores fat, to discovering brain-liver communication, to identifying molecules that could prevent fatty liver disease, teams in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center are advancing breakthroughs with real-world impact.

We share our condolences with the family of John W. Colloton, former chief executive for UI Hospitals & Clinics, who died Friday, Nov. 14. He was 94.

A native Iowan, Colloton helped transform our patient care enterprise with his vision and leadership over four decades.

“It’s truly remarkable when you consider the impact John Colloton made on our health care system, the university as a whole, and the health and well-being of Iowans and their families,” says Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, UI vice president for medical affairs. “So much of what UI Health Care represents today can be traced back to his vision. He cared deeply about the university and our health system — and it’s because he cared so much about Iowa and its people.” https://uihealthcare.pulse.ly/7fkq3fscu8

As a toddler, Ray was experiencing up to 20 seizures a day with no real diagnosis from a local hospital. He was referred to University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital, where specialists determined he was experiencing focal epilepsy that was dramatically affecting just one side of his brain. He underwent a 12-hour surgery to disconnect one side of his brain from the other.

“I remember coming out of the room, just bawling, and my family wondered what was happening,” says Ray’s mom, Cassi. “Through my tears I was able to give a thumbs up and the whole room started cheering, even the receptionist.” 💛👍

With Mission Cancer + Blood now part of UI Health Care, patients have more access to the latest cancer treatments and clinical trials closer to home. There are currently two clinical trials open to patients at both UI Health Care and Mission, with more ready to accept participants soon. Mission serves patients at more than 20 locations, primarily in central and western Iowa.

“By adding Mission to our growing system of care, we are better positioned to collaborate with health systems across the state and critical access hospitals in central Iowa,” says Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, UI vice president for medical affairs. “We intend to build on Mission’s strong, long-standing, and trusted partnerships to bring the highest quality cancer care closer to home for all Iowans.”

Kid Captain Blake Bonta was an active and healthy 10-year-old and “the class clown” until he suddenly changed, struggling to get out of bed and getting sick at school. Severe headaches led to a trip to a local hospital, where scans showed a mass in the back of his brain.

Blake was referred to University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that impacts the central nervous system.

“The word ‘cancer’ hits home when you’re not expecting it,” says Blake’s dad, Justin Bonta, of Urbandale, Iowa. “It crushed my soul.”
