On Friday, Iowa EGSR recognized Iowa City VA Health Care System along with 22 others for our outstanding support of employees with careers in the Iowa National Guard or the Reserve Components. The ICVAHCS received the Above and Beyond award which recognizes employers who go above and beyond the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits.

Today we had the honor of celebrating the heart of our Health Care System, our amazing volunteers. From greeting our Veterans at the door to driving them to their appointments our volunteers impact is undeniable.
The folks who take time out of their own lives to help others worked 31,418 hours in the last year 💘 we could not do what we do without their dedication, thank you!

VA Golden Age Games began in 1985, long before “senior athletics” was a mainstream idea. VA recognized that aging Veterans needed more than medical care. They also needed motivation, goals, and a sense of connection. So, the Games were born with just a few hundred competitors.
Today, they’ve grown into a major event where thousands of athletes and supporters from across the country come to take part. It is a living tribute to the fact that service continues after age 50 and that strength can last a lifetime.

The Veterans Health Administration is marking 80 years of supporting Veterans of all ages and abilities just like the Golden Age Game athletes. Learn more.
