Diana is needing to cancel her 6pm class tonight. She completed a memorial tribute for her baby PJ that she rescued in 2019 today, and the grief is still so tender and more emotional than she anticipated after making his tribute. Thank you for your kindness and understanding. Here is the video part of her tribute.

Morning Qigong
Online with Lori Enloe
Thursdays at 6 am starting 2/19

Rooted in Daoist philosophy, traditional Chinese Medicine, and martial arts, Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) can be translated as energy cultivation. The word Qi refers to the vital, animating force that flows through and connects all living things, while Gong means skill or cultivation — thus, Qigong is the practice of refining and balancing life energy.

Through gentle movement, mindful breathing, meditation, visualization, healing sounds, and self-massage, Qigong harmonizes the flow of energy throughout the mind and body. These practices nurture physical vitality, emotional balance, and mental clarity, creating mind-body integration and deep relaxation. In this class, participants will learn breathing techniques, visualization, and self-massage, along with foundational Daoist Qigong forms including: The Eight Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) – general health exercises to enhance strength, flexibility, and overall energy flow. and The Six Healing Sounds (Liu Zi Jue) – vocal and breath techniques designed to balance the internal organs and release stagnant energy.

How to Validate Ourselves and Others
with Dr Ren Stinson
Online, Wednesday Feb 18th 7:30-9 pm

One of the most powerful tools we can use to improve our own emotion regulation and the emotions of others is Validation. Validation helps people feel secure, safe, heard, soothed, and more interconnected. Conversely, feeling invalidated leads to anger, resentment, abandonment feelings, disconnection, and emotionally shutting down. In this workshop, we will be learning 6 well-researched validation strategies that can be used to soothe our own emotions as well as the emotions of others.

I continue to struggle with how to be of service to a hurting world without completely burning out my own energy reserves. Anyone relate?

I came across something this last week that has brought me a wave of curiosity and relief. It is something called the “Maharishi Effect”. Starting in the 1990s, there have been a number of studies that track groups of meditators while practicing together and have found that during this period of time violent crime declines sharply even after controlling for weather, policing and other social variables. (The largest study of this was done in Washington DC).

Although this research has been controversial and debated, there is some possibility that groups of people coming together in peaceful states may be impacting the coherence of the consciousness of our larger social structures.

The Heart Math institute, a nonprofit in California, is doing a project called the Global Coherence Initiative. They hypothesize that when we find individual coherence (an alignment of heart, mind, and body) that this contributes to group and even planetary coherence. Check their research out here.

I believe that we energetically do impact those around us, and that when our nervous system is regulated we become powerful influencers without ever having to say a word. The part of this research that felt so hopeful to me is that it doesn’t take a majority of people to come into coherence to make a big influence. In fact, there is a mathematical equation that accompanies the Maharishi effect. It is believed that a critical mass happens when the square root of 1% of a population becomes coherent.

I pulled out my calculator and did the math for Iowa City. If we estimate around 150,000 people in our area (including students) and apply the equation, it appears that when 39 people are coherent together, we can impact our entire community. Although this is hard to prove, it gives me hope nonetheless and feels like an action that can be taken.

So….stay tuned. We at Heartland are working on a weekly Wednesday meditation …. Stay tuned

Our Story

Located in the heart of downtown Iowa City, Heartland Yoga provides a beautiful, sacred space where students come together to practice yoga and to heal.

Our studio opened in June 2008....right in the middle of Eastern Iowa’s worst flood. We were set to officially open our doors on Monday, June 9, the same day volunteers were sandbagging multiple University buildings around campus. For our first week, we offered free yoga to all the volunteers and overwhelmed residents of Iowa City, which is actually quite symbolic of what Heartland Yoga is all about.

We are all about community, healing, and providing a safe and sacred space for people to come and take care of themselves in a deep way. People consistently comment about how powerful the space is. Some have said that just being in our space makes them feel better, and that’s before any yoga. So if you are aware that you need some kind of shift in your life, whether it’s physically, mentally, emotionally....Heartland Yoga is a great place to come. Our teachers are supportive, highly trained, and inclusive....and all bodies, shapes, sizes, races, sexual orientations, ages, and experience levels are welcomed.

To celebrate our 10 years of existence, we are celebrating with 10 BIG EVENTS starting June 2018. Please join us!
