The World Languages Graduate Student Organization (WLGO) invites you to submit abstracts for academic papers or creative writing pieces that explore the topics on change, adaptation, and perseverance within and between disciplines including, but not limited to, linguistics, language acquisition, education, anthropology, history, cognitive and behavioral sciences, computer science and information technology, literature, literary translation, cinema studies, cultural studies, gender, women, and sexuality studies, performance studies, the fine arts.

Please submit abstracts of 250 words to wlgoiaconf@gmail.com by 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 20, 2022. We prefer abstracts and presentations in English, but we will consider submissions in other languages. Final presentations for the conference should be in English. In your abstract, please specify if your presentation will be an academic paper or a creative writing piece. We welcome both individual presentations and panel proposals of 3-4 presenters. (Please note we may consider individual presentations for inclusion on a panel.) Presentations will be 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes for questions.

In addition to your abstract, please provide:
• Your name
• Your university affiliation
• The title of your presentation
• Whether you are proposing an individual presentation or a panel discussion
• A short academic biography

Hi DWLLC Graduate Students,

WLGO is excited to invite you to our annual cultural event! The theme for this year’s cultural event is Arts and Crafts, in which we get to celebrate art and creativity from around the world (and even do some hands-on crafting in the process!).

We invite you to post a picture or video about a craft, art, other forms of creative activity from your culture on our collaborative Padlet: https://bit.ly/3CYsW2I

Sign in with your university email and indicate where on the map your craft/creative activity originates from; include any images and background info. You may post as often as you wish and be sure to check out others' posts and vote on your favorites! The posts with the most likes will receive a prize in the form of graduate student care packages, and winners will be announced during the event.

To close it off, we will have a Cultural Social on Thursday, November 18th at 6:30 p.m on Zoom (link will be sent through University email). Come chill with your fellow graduate students and enjoy some end-of-day multicultural fun!

This week, WLGO will host its second graduate roundtable for this semester titled "What About the Job Market?".

As we know, the job market is pretty daunting and is something that causes anxiety for many of us. So, we wanted to start a conversation about this theme and have invited two special guests who will be speaking at the roundtable:

Dr. Cynthia Vanessa Helene Laborde, recent graduate of the Department of French and Italian, and Alejandro Pérez Belda, A.B.D, from the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa.

During the roundtable, we will have the opportunity to listen to their experiences with the job market as well as the opportunity to ask them questions.

WLGO is thrilled to share with you the program for "Alterity, Margins, and Resistance," our 2021 graduate conference! The conference will take place on Saturday, April 10 from 9:00 a.m.-5:15 p.m. and will feature an exciting array of presentations from graduate students in the DWLLC and other departments and universities. We are also pleased to announce that our keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Saba Khan Vlach, Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the University of Iowa. We hope you will join us for an engaging day!

For our social, we have set up a Palentine's Day Affirmation Exchange, through which you can send a note to one of your peers telling them what you think makes them so great.

How to participate in the WLGO Palentine’s Day Affirmation Exchange:

1. RSVP on Elfster by Friday, February 13th. We will draw names on that date. To help your pal-entine, take time to answer some of Ice Breaker questions.
2. Check back to see who your “pal-entine” is and write them an affirmation on the Palentine’s Day Affirmation Exchange padlet by February 15th.
