Yesterday’s TV Bingo session included a touch of springtime fun, with Katy and Linda hosting🌷🐇

Patients can tune in on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 1:30 p.m. on hospital TV, channel 117. TV Bingo is a collaborative effort with the Patient Library, Rehabilitation Therapies, and the University of Iowa Adolescent and Young Adult - AYA Cancer Program.

Holden congratulates Gawain Williams, PhD candidate of health services and policy, on receiving the University of Iowa Graduate Research Excellence Award in Social Sciences from the Office of the Vice President for Research. 👏

Williams studies why some communities experience worse cancer outcomes than others, with a special focus on prostate cancer among Black populations living in rural areas.

In 2020, Sharon — a retired Waterloo nurse who had spent years caring for patients after lung surgery — found herself on the receiving end of care when a screening test detected early-stage lung cancer. To this day, after a robotic procedure at University of Iowa Health Care removed the tumor, her cancer has not returned. Sharon is considered cured. 💛

Recently, Holden member Sarah Short, PhD, delivered the keynote presentation “Ask Me Why I’m Blue: Working to Conquer Colon Cancer” at a Colorectal Cancer Research and Awareness event hosted by the ACS Colleges Against Cancer chapter at the University of Northern Iowa.

The event brought together passionate student leaders dedicated to learning about cancer, supporting survivors, and advancing cancer advocacy.

Ellen Voigt, PhD candidate in cancer biology, has received the Graduate Research Excellence Award in Biological Sciences from the University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research. Voigt works in the Quelle lab studying rare and aggressive cancers and potential treatment options.

A new era of treatment is underway at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our team has treated its first patient with T-cell receptor therapy, an innovative immunotherapy designed to help the immune system target synovial sarcoma — a rare and aggressive cancer.

Advances like this are helping bring new hope and new possibilities to patients and families.
