Last week, we hosted a visit with Workplace Learning Connections, for a group with Bettendorf High School. This group of students was able to learn about Carver College of Medicine admissions, work with activities in the nursing simulation lab, and explore the hyperbaric chamber at University of Iowa Health Care’s main campus hospital. Recently, students from West Liberty High School iJAG participated in a high school STEM visit. Here, they were able to hear from multiple professionals in a variety of careers. They learned about child life, nursing, and anesthesia. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Air Care region of the downtown campus hospital. A couple of weeks ago, our STEM team hosted a radiation sciences visit with Workplace Learning Connections. Here, students from multiple high schools around Iowa were able to tour the radiation sciences areas of our downtown campus hospital. They learned about the radiation sciences careers, watched live demonstrations of different radiation sciences modalities, and participated in a question-and-answer session with current radiation sciences students. A couple of weeks ago, our STEM team hosted Workplace Connection’s Nursing Day. Here, high school students explored a variety of careers in nursing and interacted with professionals in the nursing department. They learned about the daily life of a nurse and got to tour the Nursing Clinical Education Center. Last week, our STEM team partnered with Workplace Learning Connections to host Junior Medical School Day. Here, students from schools across the county were able to experience what it is like to be a medical student as they learned about the admissions process to medical school, practiced diagnosing patients, and explored human anatomy with University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine students. A couple of weeks ago, our STEM team had the opportunity to attend the Iowa Children’s Museum STEM Family Free Night. This event was a wonderful opportunity for families of all ages to learn about medicine and STEM! Here, a variety of students including PA students, PhD students, MD students, and PT students were able to teach attendees about different parts of their careers and what they consist of. They also provided hands on activities for attendees to participate in, in order to get a feel for what these jobs are actually like. These activities included, laparoscopic surgery skills, a PT obstacle course, physical exam skills, and much more! We would like to thank the Iowa Children’s Museum for making this event possible and all of those who attended this event!

A couple of weeks ago, our STEM team had the opportunity to attend the Fire and Ice Winter Festival in North Liberty. Here, community members of all ages were able to engage in our “Science Behind Instant Snow” activity. They were able to view the chemistry of instant snow and learned what makes this substance have its magic powers! This event also included many other amazing activities including ice sculptures, fire performances, and fireworks for families of all ages to enjoy.

A few weeks ago, our STEM team had the pleasure of participating in Workplace Learning Connection’s “STEAM Institute” event. Here middle school students from the Iowa City School District and surrounding areas were able to participate in hands on medical based activities. They were able to learn multiple physical exam skills including how to use a stethoscope, how to use a pupil dilator, and how to take blood pressure. We would like to thank all of the students, volunteers, and educators who attended this event as well as workplace learning connections for making it all happen.
