This is a great offering for the community by one of our hospice agency partners! Thank you Iowa City Hospice 💙
Thank you to Iowa City Hospice for allowing us to be a part of their annual golf tournament, we had a blast raising support for an even better cause!! 🏌️‍♂️
I have to expose these people for who they really are. Our family is left with so many unanswered question and traumatized by the whole situation. They people proclaim they have 4 core principles they live by which is Integrity, Respect, Planning and Quality. When it came to my father Gilbert Duke Kyle III the so called core values you guys proclaimed you operate under was not met. You guys did not honor or respect my father's wishes when he said he couldn't breathe and he wanted to go to the hospital the answer we received from your workers is that they said there was nothing more that you guys could do at the hospital than what we were already doing at home. When everything was all said and done we all feel as if we helped killed our father because your on call nurses had us to adminster morphine to our father every 1 hour. We all feel as if we overdosed our dad and killed him because of your guys actions. You preyed on the weak and just didn't care. The on call nurse made our family feel as if they didn't care. There is no explanation on why we should had been the one wiping blood from my fathers mouth every 5 seconds. We watched our dad suffer he did not go peacefully we watched him struggle to breathe throat and mouth swollen and no one ever cared. We asked for other measures to be taken so he didn't suffer and all you guys said is give him morphine give him lorazapam. You guys have became so numb. So sympathy was shown to our family. I felt as if we were the nurses and you guys provided the drugs. Our minds will never be the same from what we had to endure. We watched our father fight to breathe nose flared sweating uncontrollable face and mouth swollen and all you guys could say is this was the process. No one ever explained to us anything the only thing you guys explained qasbto shove morphine down his throat. They lady that was on call acted like it was to much for her to even check his oxygen levels. At one point she handed me the oxidometer and said if you want yo know his oxygen levels go check it. What human being displays action as such. I'm so mortified and angry. My father passed on Monday not once have you guys called to provide any type of support to our family no condolences no empthamy nothing. If this is what hospice is suppose to look like then there is no need for hospice services for anyone. Then yhe lady that came right before my father passed had the nevere to say I did the intake on your father Wednesday and if I knew he was going to decline this quickly I would have done more. How do you think that made us feel. The ball was definitely dropped on you guys behalf and justice needs to be prevailed. NO JUSTICE NO PEACE!!
This going to be a long post but I have to get this out…. My dad went into hospice on Wednesday of last week by the weekend my dad started to decline. On the first night of me calling hospice the lady was on call and she seemed flustered that I was calling because it was late that I had to say I know you tired but I need you to come now, now at this point my dads tongue is swollen with blisters his whole face swollen his tongue is twisted worst thing I seen in my life! Moving on the nurse comes bring us haloperidol they said it would relax him so we was giving it to him it was not working so I called them out again they gave us Ativan which by the way is the same type of medication oh and let me add we were administering his meds they came dropped off and left! Now we are at Sunday morning another nurse comes out looks at my dads mouth that now is even worse she told us to up the other meds and basically left now it’s getting to Sunday night my dad can barely talk his face completely swollen another nurse comes out the one from the very first time she brings us Morphine and basically told us what we were going through my dad at that point which could barely speak asked to go the hospital the nurse told us that was no point because what we were doing at home was all they would do at hospital which made us believe that we shouldn’t send him now this was not our decision to make but it’s like she made us believe it was the best instead of then honoring what he wanted! At this point she said to give him a syringe full of morphine every hour as well as give the Ativan! Now again they did nothing we were the ones giving him these meds at this point they never once did anything to help us with him! Okay now we at early Monday morning my dad had blood and blood clots coming out of his mouth every 5 minutes and no that’s not exaggerating my aunt my brother step mom and sister had to take shifts to continue to catch the blood we called them we were told it’s part of the dying process we are now at the point when my dad is starting to stop breathing but would breathe again the nurse seen this and left saying just give him the Morphine! I watched my dad struggle to breathe I watched my dad take his last breathe the only people from Iowa city Hospice that cared was the Chaplin and music director they tried to intervene basically when my dad was already dead me and my family was the health care workers they were our drug suppliers! I fell guilty in thinking we helped kill my dad by giving him syringes full of morphine ! Their core values that they say they value are all lies they didn’t care about my dad or us now I cant sleep because all I see is my dads expression and last breathe ! Me and my family was traumatized we saw and done things we shouldn’t of had to endure!! My brothers had to help get my dad out the house after he was dead nothing was done professionally! Crazy thing is my dad been dead 3 days now no one reached out to us! The lady after my dad death apologized and said if she knew it was going to be this bad she would have done more who says that…… how my dad died does not sit right with me or my family !!

Featured orgs include the Great Plains Action Society, uniting Indigenous Midwesterners to seek justice for decades of genocide via residential schools, police brutality, environmental violence and more; the Friends of Hickory Hill Park, who led the campaign to develop the beloved natural space in a way that benefits the city, its residents and wildlife; and the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit, helping new American citizens become new American business owners.

Plus: Waterloo’s 1619 Freedom School, Iowan-owned Etsy shops, and profiles of local book publishers and record labels.

Also inside: Andre’ Wright presents the Black Liberation Space, including four pages of art designed by young Black creatives.

Visit littlevillagemag.com/give during our November-December donation drive to learn more about the local nonprofits and retailers in this year’s Give Guide and how you can help support them.
