43 courageous women joined me on the island of Paros, Greece for a week retreat studying the Heroine’s Journey and the rise of the feminine.

It is such a privilege to witness women connecting to their strength, burning through their limitations, and envisioning a more authentic life. So grateful for a week like this for women to quantum leap forward.

Thanks for always managing the details so I can show up and teach!

Next retreat Nosara, Costa Rica May 2026. Details in bio.

I am an avid reader and am always looking for the next great book. I have known of David Hawkins work and read his seminal book “Power vs Force” years ago and it has definitely shaped my thinking about the energetics and frequency of emotions.

My friend Megan recently told me about his book “Map of Consciousness” which I of course bought immediately. It sums up his life’s work (he is a psychiatrist). Megan suggested we do a book club with discussion, guided exercises and prompts to work with.

So, if you are also a seeker, reader, and curious about raising consciousness, join me and Megan for 8 weeks as we move through the 8 chapters of this powerful book.

Here are the details:
Fridays 9:30-11am
October 17-December 5
Cost: $199

People have been requesting to join online so this class will be a hybrid model where some of us will be in person in studio and some online.

Register and details in bio.

I am excited to announce Heartland Yoga’s first yoga teacher training.

Although Heartland has been open almost 18 years, we have never offered a teacher training. I have taught several of these trainings in Cedar Rapids, but never felt drawn to start a program in Iowa City. My reasoning for this was that there were already so many yoga teacher trainings in the area, and so many yoga teachers, that I felt strongly about not flooding the market.

But my reasoning has changed. Although there are still plenty of places locally and online where people can become trained to teach yoga, I have noticed that too much of current yoga culture is focused on strengthening, stretching, improving, and fortifying the body. While this absolutely happens, what has seemed to be lost, and what is at the heart of yoga, is that it is a practice for the mind.

I’ve been a practicing psychologist for 22 years now, so my focus and work has always been on the mind. Mental health concerns in our population continue to be amplified. These are unsettling times and change is happening so quickly that most of us our reeling. Our bodies, the densest aspect of self, can hardly keep up with the changing landscape our minds are experiencing. All of this contributes to dysregulated nervous systems where we feel tired and wired at the same time.

My passion for mental health and trauma informed practices (because the majority of us are holding trauma in the body) are a big impetus for why Heartland is going to offer a yoga teacher training. People need yoga. People need meditation. People need to learn to breath and down regulate their nervous systems. People need to learn tools to manage the stress and quiet the mind. I’m no longer worried about flooding the system with teachers - we need more people teaching, practicing, and above all, living their yoga.

When I took my first teacher training 20 years ago, I had no expectation that I would teach. I was curious about it for myself, and was thinking I might apply some of what I learned in my psychology practice. I had no idea that I would go on to open a studio and devote my work life to yoga and psychology integration. This is to say: you don’t have to even believe you will teach to take part in this. If you feel the nudge, but have no idea what you will do with the certification, know that you will be shown, and if it is just for your personal growth and evolution, it will be well worth you investment of resources and time.

I am thrilled also to have such a “dream team” of teachers for this training. Uma has a depth of teaching experience, and her literal roots are in India, so she brings an understanding of the tradition that few do. Kimberly brings her years of teaching plus her study of social justice and end of life care. Learning from multiple teachers with different voices and styles is ideal for students to see multiple ways to approach teaching yoga.

The training starts in January, and all the details can be found here. We are having an informational meeting on Sunday, September 28 @ 1PM.

Reorganizing Our Internal Spaces
Retreat with Dr. Betsy
Blue Spirit Retreat, Nosara Costa Rica
May 9-16, 2026

This retreat comes at an ideal time of year to purify your system and shed the energetic heaviness of winter. Maddie Corman is a well-known actress we had the honor to interview in this week’s Tend Her Wild podcast. And after hearing her story I now understand that she is a brave warrior.

Maddie’s story is intense, heartbreaking, and also filled with hope and courage. For anyone who has been through something they wondered if they could emotionally survive, Maddie’s story shows the possibility of healing from betrayal trauma.

She talks about how her world fell apart almost exactly 10 years ago and shared that coming on the podcast now felt especially poignant.

Please listen and share….this is a powerful one.

Thank you for introducing us to Maddie and directing her amazing show Accidentally Brave on HBO.

The Waning Light: Practices, A Meditation & New Consciousness TODAY @ Noon CST

As the long days of summer disappear, we find ourselves on the cusp of Autumn, which can create a spike in anxiety and restlessness. Betsy knows this challenging transition well, and in this month’s Wisdom Wednesday she will share what she is doing to not only move more fluidly through this time but also how to use the energy of the season to awaken to more consciousness.

Here is what we will cover today:
How to pivot from the negative, fear based thinking that often accompanies this time of year.
The practices Betsy is currently doing to lessen her autumn anxiety.
The trip from the head to the heart, and her favorite meditation that supports this pathway.
Why 2025, and in particular this transition into fall and winter, is being described as a time to move into a new earth and a new consciousness, and the signs that this might be happening to you.
