Thank you for choosing the University of Iowa for your PhD training, Lizzie!! ⬛️🟨

Lizzie Hannan chose the University of Iowa Biomedical Science Graduate Program because it felt so welcoming. Despite the challenges of pursuing a PhD, Lizzie says her time at the University of Iowa has been rewarding.

“There are so many classes to choose from and so many labs open to students that it really feels like the possibilities of what to do your research on are endless,” she says.

When Sofiya Pisarenka isn’t painting along with Bob Ross or spending time with her beloved cat, she’s researching a group of rare kidney diseases known as C3 glomerulopathies. “The best part about being a graduate student at the University of Iowa is that you get to pursue a degree at a prestigious, internationally recognized institution while being able to have a decent quality of life due to the relatively low cost of living,” she says. “There are few places where you can have both, and the University of Iowa is one of them.”

Ali Khan found balance during his PhD program in cancer biology through relationships with his fellow graduate students and becoming a personal trainer for the University of Iowa campus recreation centers. “Coming to a new place as an international student can be hard, but the community of graduate students has been very welcoming and helpful,” he says.
