In a recent publication, Drs. Andrea Weber and Marcus Osman examine how cross-disciplinary care integration can improve treatment engagement and liver transplant outcomes for people with alcohol use disorder. Their work emphasizes the limitations of effectively treating alcohol-related liver disease without also treating its underlying cause: addiction. By highlighting models of integrated care, they reimagine what a liver transplant team can accomplish when harnessing addiction medicine.

The Department of Internal Medicine sends condolences to those touched by the life of Charles M. Helms, MD, PhD. Helms was a member of the Division of Infectious Diseases for 35 years, served as a Associate Dean in the Carver College of Medicine for four years and UIHC Chief of Staff for eight years. He is remembered by his colleagues for his "great (and interesting) humor" and being a "fundamentally kind, decent, and humble man." Dr. Helms will forever be a role model and a Hawkeye.

A memorial will be held in Iowa City on Saturday, Feb 14, with a visitation starting at 1 before the service at 3.
