In case you missed it:

Last Friday, Feb. 27, it was Thank a Resident & Fellow Day. On her “Views,” post from that afternoon, our Chair and DEO, Upi Singh, MD, reflected on all that our trainees bring to the department. A card set up right by Med Alum was a small token of the gratitude she describes so well. Read more: https://internalmedicineiowa.org/2026/02/27/our-trainees-our-purpose/

William Thiel, PhD, associate professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, has partnered with Rahul Singh, PhD, of UI Computer Science, to develop a safer treatment for coronary heart disease. Although life-saving, stents can trigger abnormal cell growth. Dr. Thiel will investigate whether a specialized molecule can prevent these downstream side effects.

When Internal Medicine engages in cross-departmental collaboration, patients stand to benefit from exciting translational advances. Thank you for your work, Dr. Thiel and Dr. Singh

On this year's Thank a Resident & Fellow Day, Internal Medicine faculty and leadership have a few words for our trainees.

These messages are just a small glimpse into how grateful we are for all the time our residents & fellows invest into caring for patients and advancing research. The diligence, innovation, and compassion they bring to the clinic and lab every day are shaping the future of Internal Medicine. So when you get the chance, take a moment to thank a resident or fellow for everything they do.

Congratulations, Dr. Fiordellisi, on receiving a G.E.M. Award!

The Going the Extra Mile Award recognizes Iowa River Landing employees who go to great lengths to support patients, visitors, and staff. This excerpt from Dr. Fiordellisi's award announcement highlights her commitment to exceptional patient care: "...I was struggling to get in to see a new specialty and Dr. Fiordellisi stepped in to make it happen when I was not able to move 'the system'...on my own. We feel like she knows us and cares for us. She asks about our lives and remembers what we tell her..."

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit ranks in the 93rd percentile nationally for nurse responsiveness and the 82nd percentile for patients' likelihood to recommend. The Office of the Patient Experience determined these metrics based on patient feedback from a nationwide survey.

This is a great example of our inpatient teams going the extra mile to foster trust with patients and their loved ones.
