Enjoying the Iowa City Book Fest and a beautiful day downtown! I heard Natalie Goldberg, author of "Writing Down the Bones." When I was in high school, this book was one I received free for starting a book club subscription. (I adored free gifts, especially books). It spoke to me though I didn't continue writing much past high school. Wonderful to see her in person and learn about her new book.

The last day of the PAVA Symposium started with ToolTalks and MicroWorkshops! Attendees got to see the perceptual voice training app in action and hear how it was developed by U Iowa undergrads in Biomedical Engineering for their Senior Design Project. Thank you, Kailey Mackin, Charlize Santos, Matthew Speranza, and your instructors, for creating the prototype app!

The next step is getting funding to rate more voice samples, to continue the app development, and to try it out with students!

Presentation number one is done! Thanks to everyone who joined me today in 3D and 2D for the Pan American Vocology Association Symposium 2024. It's been great to have so many discussions about adult learning with conference attendees, as well as all sorts of other topics like rolled /r/!

Join me for my ToolTalk on Sunday morning!

Ever have a great idea for an app or a teaching tool? Thanks to recent graduates of the Iowa Biomedical Engineering program, idea for an app to train listening skills for SLP students has a prototype! I'm talking about this collaborative progress and demonstrating the prototype at the PAVA Symposium on Sunday!

We're looking for more voice samples and funding to get more voice samples rated and to create a beta version of the app. Let me know if you are interested!

As SLPs, we’re often unexpectedly thrust into supervising a graduate student or clinical fellow without much (or any!) formal leadership training.

As a result, your supervisory style might feel like a mix of random ingredients thrown together: a pinch of what your past supervisors did, a dash of what your colleagues are trying, and a sprinkle of late-night Googling.

…fortunately, there’s a simpler, more intentional way to become the best version of your SLP supervisor self (

Learned so much and connected with great faculty and students last week at Somatic Voicework - The LoVetri Method at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, OH. I first meet Jeannie in 2006 and had already heard of her work for years. It was fantastic to finally make it to her course and get the whole picture. It's expanded my perspective on CCM singing and given me more functional tools that will be useful for voice rehabilitation and teaching my graduate students! Here are a few picture from the course--wish I had more!

Enjoyed reconnecting with Justine Boswell at the Lovetri Institute at Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, OH. Justine was a student at Minnesota State University Moorhead at the same time I was teaching there (she was in a different studio).
