Mobility Danes of New England, Inc.

Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. Our second mission is to serve our local community. SDP’s farm

is a destination for all ages — from teens doing community service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

🍂 Pecan’s Windy-Day Confidence

Pecan continues to show her naturally calm demeanor no matter what’s happening around her. On a recent windy training outing, she had plenty of chances to lean on that steadiness as she walked past flapping flags, chiming wind bells, and dancing wind socks.

She wasn’t entirely sure about moving directly past them at first, but she never lost her composure. Instead, she stayed grounded, took everything in stride, and carried on with that quiet confidence that’s becoming one of her signature strengths.

Pecan handled the entire outing beautifully, showing once again that she has the temperament and resilience needed for the important work ahead of her.

Today was a good day to take advantage of nice weather and work outside. Onyx worked on her pace, ignoring distractions, such as children running by, baby carriages and ignoring people walking to ensure her progress on focusing on her handler.
She also worked on walking across different textured surfaces such as bricks, tiled and shiny floors.

Onyx also worked on her down stay and staying calm with distractions around or walking by her. ...

Pecan, Onyx, and Izzy enjoyed all the attention they received from students last week at Salem State University. The younger pups did very well staying engaged for over two hours interacting with the visitors. This was a great opportunity to socialize them and get them comfortable around groups of people, and both loved all the attention. Pecan is well versed in doing social events, and she got to work the room off leash for much of the time. All three dogs happily napped for the entire ride back to Maine. Getting all those belly rubs was very exhausting!

🛒 Echo’s Training Day at Lowe’s

Echo had a wonderfully productive outing at Lowe’s, where she practiced several skills that will be essential for her future work as a service dog.

One of her big focuses was walking alongside a shopping cart—a skill that can feel awkward for many young dogs at first. Echo handled it with impressive ease, staying steady, relaxed, and right in sync with her handler. She also spent time getting comfortable in tight spaces, an important part of preparing her for real‑world scenarios like settling under a restaurant table or fitting neatly at her person’s feet on an airplane.

Echo also worked on backing up, a deceptively important skill for service dogs. When a space is too tight to turn around, being able to back up calmly and confidently keeps both dog and handler safe and mobile. Echo showed great understanding and willingness as she practiced this maneuver.

Throughout the outing, she walked at a lovely, consistent pace, staying right beside her handler and checking in naturally as she moved along. Her focus, her willingness, and her calm presence all stood out.

Echo is truly on a wonderful path—her skills, her temperament, and her work ethic are all pointing toward her becoming an outstanding service dog.

Cashew’s travel adventures in New York continued this week with a trip to the Big Apple! He accompanied Trainer Doug on the Long Island Railroad into Penn Station, and then they walked the busy sidewalks of Manhattan, including a visit to Times Square. Cashew did a great job handling the hustle and bustle of the big city, and he became quite the instant celebrity!

We often talk about the benefits of our dogs getting plenty of “mileage” during training, as the more exposure they get, the more acclimated they become to different types of locations and experiences. Cashew took this quite literally over the past week, covering ground from Freeport, Maine, to Long Island, New York. He visited the headquarters of L.L.Bean, checked out the Pinkies (a trio of monumental steel sculptures sheathed in reclaimed fishing gear from beaches and coastal waters), and set sail on the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry to make the 18-mile trek across the Long Island Sound.
