Service Dog Project Inc.

Service Dog Project Inc. Service Dog Project Inc. is a non-profit organization training Great Dane Service Dogs for mobility. Our second mission is to serve our local community.

SDP’s main mission is to breed, raise, train, and donate certified service dogs to people who experience difficulty with their balance or mobility. These partnerships often help to enhance the recipient’s quality of life as they attain greater independence. Preference is given to military veterans, first responders and their families. SDP’s farm is a destination for all ages — from teens doing community service, to seniors in search of a meaningful task and social interaction, to military veterans (many with PTSD) who enjoy feeling useful and connected while doing farm chores. Our Road Show project of dogs and trainers visiting senior centers provides much-needed smiles and comfort.

Walnut wished “bon voyage” this morning to the passengers of a harbor cruise boat in Newburyport. With zero hesitation, he surprisingly stepped onto the see-through metal grate leading to the dock, perhaps with the hopes of joining the tour! Walnut is very comfortable around water, whether it’s cooling down in his kiddie pool at home, playing with the garden hose, or checking out the boats harborside in Newburyport. Today, he walked through the dancing fountains in downtown, unbothered with getting his feet wet or getting splashed!

A Great Dane brings balance—and joy.

Ever wonder what it’s like to trust a dog with your independence? For many of our recipients, it means regaining confidence in every step. Take a look at one of our Great Danes, decked out for the holidays, ready to brighten someone’s world both inside and out.

Each of our dogs is specially trained to support those with mobility challenges, offering not just strength but a sense of belonging and hope. Their journey starts here, but their impact lasts a lifetime.

Acorn took a trip to the batting cages and driving range at Golf Country on this beautiful Labor Day. He was testing his tolerance for loud sounds and sudden movements, as well as his composure in the holiday crowds with lots of children. The batting cages were not much of a challenge for him, but the driving range was a little scarier at first. He walked with some concern behind each of the several dozen hitting bays, most of which were in use, and then hung out behind a few kids to watch them hit balls. With each ball they hit, Acorn better understood what they were doing, and he determined they were not much of a threat. The second walk behind every golfer was far more relaxed, with Acorn focused on his handler instead of being concerned with his surroundings. He’s well on his way to being “bombproof” - not bad at 11 months!

Today was our Paws Ahoy fishing trip and the weather was ideal. Bright sunshine and calm waters made for a successful morning fishing for mackerel. We are looking forward to another trip next year.

Thank you, Maureen, for being such a wonderful SDP supporter! Our dogs love to visit you and The Perfectly Imperfect Gift Shoppe!

We had a super adorable visitor at The Perfectly Imperfect Gift Shoppe today.
Acorn, one of the Great Danes from the Service Dog Project, was here with his handler/trainer John. Our buddy Acorn is almost a year old and he will soon be going to person in need of his service dog expertise.

Why do we choose Great Danes only?

These gentle giants aren’t just big—they’re perfectly built for providing balance support to folks with neurological or physical disabilities. Their height and strength mean a stable partner for walking, standing, or navigating daily life. Plus, their calm nature makes them wonderful companions for veterans, kids, and adults with conditions like MS, Parkinson’s, or CP.

Ever wondered how a dog transforms someone’s independence? Visit our website or reach out to learn if a service dog could be right for you. 🐾

Miss Berry has been working hard on and making good progress at being brave around shopping carts and sudden noises. Today’s training took her to Costco, Guitar Center, Walmart, and PetSmart. The food court section at the front of Costco is perfect for watching a constant flow of people pushing their carts. Guitar Center’s percussion room is an ideal place to desensitize to sudden, loud sounds. Berry is a great sport with working on addressing her anxiety triggers, as she never goes into shut down mode. It’s rewarding to watch her exhibit pride when she tackles a fear, as if to say, “Hey, look at me. I did it!”

Walnut picked a beautiful day to train in downtown Newburyport. He enjoyed watching all the boating activity, and was particularly fond of the 130’ yacht docked along the boardwalk. His pace was great, despite plenty of distractions. Walnut also got to see many different types of dogs during his visit, so he was able to practice staying focused on his handler while around other dogs, some well mannered and others not so much. And, of course, this handsome boy got a ton of compliments, as is par for the course with him!

Second video from Acorn’s training session. He practiced long down/stays and recall, as well as stairs, unders, falls, and other skills, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston North Shore. This is Acorn recalling after a three-minute down/stay. This boy loves to work!

08/25/2025

Acorn trained today at the DoubleTree by Hilton and Essex Sports Center. The ice rinks were empty, so we practiced backing into rows in the metal bleachers. This is pretty similar to how Acorn would back into a row on a plane. Doing it on metal bleachers adds some to the degree of difficulty, as some dogs don’t even like stepping on the unusual surface. Acorn struggled some last time with this exercise, but he did a great job today! A video from his work at the hotel this morning will be posted separately.
