Throughout my career, I have witnessed how the role of a pediatric OT has changed and evolved. As in years past, we continue to provide therapy to improve fine and gross motor skills. Our primary goal is to help our clients achieve their highest functional level to participate in daily tasks. For children, these daily tasks include school, play, self care, and socialization. In recent years, there is a growing need for support in the area of SELF REGULATION. Parents and caregivers are reaching out for support to understand their child’s behavior and asking what they can do to help.
WHAT IS SELF REGULATION?
Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and manage your energy states, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that are acceptable and produce positive results.
Without self regulation, it is difficult to manage emotions, learn, and engage in positive social interactions. It is one of the biggest developmental tasks of childhood.
HOW CAN OT HELP WITH SELF REGULATION?
OT’s can support you and your child with self regulation skills. Incorporating sensory activities helps to regulate the nervous system and also provides opportunities to build self awareness. A child might say, “I feel calm when sitting in a hammock swing” or “I noticed that I felt more focused after jumping on the trampoline, crashing into pillows, or moving through an obstacle course.” OT’s understand the nervous system and the “science” behind the activities we introduce as part of therapy. These sensory activities support self regulation while children and families gain insight and understanding about their particular system and ways to achieve a regulatory state. We then teach ways to incorporate this input and strategies to carry over into daily life. There are also programs such as the Alert Program or Zones of Regulation that use visuals and age appropriate concepts to help children navigate situations when they might have difficulty with self regulation.
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?
It is important to remember that all children need time to develop self regulation skills. It is developmentally appropriate for young children to react with big emotions. We need to honor those emotions and show empathy as they navigate through childhood. Focus on their strengths and point out when they are successful.
If you are concerned about your child please reach out for a free consultation to determine if OT might be a good option for your child. My practice incorporates the family as part of the process so skills are developed and generalized into everyday life.
