Mellys question of the day.

Sometimes there are strong feelings when it comes to horse welfare and what's right and what's wrong. Old school versus new school. I try to be a voice for them and I feel very passionate about their well being.
So my question today is, what is one thing you have learned and try to do better for the horses? Mine is that I know that they do not need to be corrected harshly with a whip or twitch or aggressive behavior, it is not needed to communicate with them and that they respond better to subtle cues and they want clear communication. So I do my best to communicate clearly what I am looking for and it is a skill I believe to be worked on for a lifetime.

Mellys horse tip of the day!

I can't express how important it is to curry comb your horse. When we curry the horse sometimes some horses need a softer curry than others. Like ottb are very sensitive while a draft horse or a warmblood has thicker skin so they can withstand a regular hard rubber curry!
Currying helps to increase blood flow and helps to relax the fascia as well! I would also suggest keeping your other hand on the horse while currying or brushing of any kind. It communicates to the horse where you are and is just a comfort for them and also keeps you in tuned with the present moment encase they move, spook or kick at a fly you can be prepared!
And please think of your rhythm when you brush to try and match their heart beat to kind of link up with them. So a horse heart beats about 22-42 at a resting heart rate. So slow down and make the grooming relaxing for you both whether you ride or not. Grooming is how they bond with each other and it is never rushed!

Melly helpful horsey tip for the day!
I believe one of the best things under saddle you can do for your horse is walk. Do a longer warm up than you think you need at the walk or even cool out for longer. Or just have a walking ride! I believe it is the best way to build up the whole horse whether coming back from injury, having the winter off or anything really. It is the least impactful gait for your horse's body and allows us to really feel the movement of the horse. And also to practice standing up in the stirrups for our balance, or practicing our position.
I will always support how beneficial the walk is under the saddle walking or even hand walking your horse like we do with our dogs. It's the bond I feel at the walk, where a lifelong bond is built.
