October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Did you know that breastfeeding can decrease your risk of breast cancer?
Your breast cancer risk decreases 7% per each birth and an additional 4.3% for every 12 months of breastfeeding !
One of the things I’m passionate about is growing the lactation field, especially as I age (my oldest just started college y’all! 😭 I have a whole baby adult out in the world! But don’t worry, I still have two kids in elementary school 🤦♀️ I’m not going anywhere for a long while 😂) I want to make sure there is a new generation of IBCLCs prepared to continue to serve our community.
My goal is to build a pathway through my office and Kala is the brave soul traveling this pathway first. She has been working the front desk for over a year now while she finished her lactation education. And with her background as a doula she knows how to nurture and care for a dyad in their vulnerable postpartum state. She is the herbal expert in the office and I’m just so proud of her! If you’re looking for a LC with buckets of empathy, who is up to date on the newest evidence AND knows all the crunchy remedies, you want to see Kala. Schedule with her now at www.columbialc.com/schedule
Are you interested in being the next future IBCLC to work at Columbia Lactation Care? Apply now at www.columbialc.com/careers I can’t wait to hear from you!

Some of you have had the pleasure of working with our newest IBCLC already, but for those who haven’t I’m thrilled to introduce Rachel Ashley, RN, BSN, IBCLC as part of the CLC team! 🎉
Rachel comes to us with a wide background of experience and she arrived at just the right moment! She’s worked as a nurse in mother/baby, pediatrics, and provided lactation services in hospital, at home visits, and in a pediatric office.
Still lactating for a 10 month old of her own, if you want an IBCLC who is in the thick of it with you, Rachel is your girl. Schedule now at www.columbialc.com/schedule ☺️

To set yourself up for breastfeeding success we
recommend once you're given the go-ahead from your OB/midwife, go ahead and start practicing hand expression to begin collecting colostrum.
If you're not sure where to begin, here are some helpful places to start-
First droplets- https://firstdroplets.com
One of the most empowering steps you can take during pregnancy to pave the way for breastfeeding success is enrolling in a breastfeeding class! Both Lexington and Prisma offer fantastic options!
If you're weighing the choice between a class or a one-on-one prenatal appointment, reflect on any family history of tongue ties, latch difficulties with older children, or concerns about low milk supply. If any of these resonate with you, don’t hesitate—head to our website to schedule your appointment today!

I’m Kristyn, Certified Lactation Counselor and mother of 4 crazy beautiful (but mostly CRAZY children 😉).
My passion for helping families in their baby feeding journeys started with my own breastfeeding story. In 2007 my first son was born and he was a struggle to feed. Thankfully I had access to a wonderful IBCLC in the hospital, Holly. She stood by my side through going back to work full time at 8 weeks postpartum, months of sore ni***es (from what I would learn 8 years later was an un-diagnosed tongue tie), mastitis, thrush, and a dramatic drop in supply at 4 months old when I took medication I shouldn't have.
I had set a goal to exclusively breastfeed for 6 months before introducing complementary foods and continue until the age of 1. In the end I was able to meet my goals and we nursed for 15 months despite all our challenges. Her support inspired me with a desire to help and support other mothers the way she had supported me.
In 2012 I became a Certified Lactation Counselor as the first step towards my goal of becoming an IBCLC. In September 2015 I started Columbia Lactation Care to do my part in providing resources and solutions to families in our community who are struggling with breastfeeding for whatever reason.
My goal is to be your Holly. To help and support you in meeting YOUR personal breastfeeding goals, whatever those may be. A week, a month, a year or three; it doesn't matter to me what your goal is. Only that you are able to overcome any obstacle set in your path and meet it. And maybe somewhere down the line, someone will remember me the way I still remember her.
