When I worked in refractive surgery, I had to discourage eye rubbing at post-op all the time. I wanted to have a cone of shame in the exam room just for show to reinforce the rule.

As some of you may know, Dr. Garrett donates his time every year for mission work to those in Honduras who are in desperate need of eye surgery. These surgeries would not be possible for many without the help and generous donations that Dr. Garrett brings with him each year. During his week-long stay, Dr. Garrett performs between 15 to 20 corneal transplants. Patients travel days from the surrounding region to reach the clinic he volunteers at. For over 20 years Dr. Garrett has committed to changing the lives of those in need in Honduras.

We hope you enjoy this years haul of happy patient photos!

Well friends, it has been a long time since we posted on our Garrett Eye page. We do apologize for not keeping in touch; there is some kind of a virus going around that has interfered with our normal schedules and routines but we're getting back on track and appreciate your patronage.

Hopefully this new year, 2021 has started on a positive vibe for you and your loved ones. We here at Garrett Eye have overcome some Covid challenges and still are working on getting use to the new normal. As always we are still here for your medical eyecare needs.

February is known as Age Related Macular Degeneration awareness month (ARMD). There are two types of this disease that affects the eye differently. Dry ARMD is a common eye disorder among people of 50. It causes reduced and blurred vision due to thinning of the macula; the part of our eye that gives us clear vision. The second type of ARMD is wet that causes a blind spot or blurred vision caused by abnormal blood vessels that leak or bleed into the macula that then causes blurred vision. Treatment for wet may include series of injections to help dry the leak and stable the vision. Eye vitamins may help slow down the progression of blurred or lost vision. Vitamins containing lutein, zeaxanthin, saffron, bill berries, blue berries and black currents have been studied to have positive results to encourage healthy eyes. And always protect your eyes from UV light when outdoors and blue light from electronic devices.

So please be sure to have an annual dilated eye exam to evaluate the health of your eyes. Early diagnosis is key to treatment and preventing permanent loss of vision.

HAPPY MARCH 2020!

March is National Workplace Eye Wellness/Health Month

Injuries around the workplace can occur at anytime; including an eye injury. Hazardous chemicals, dust and foreign objects can cause serious eye conditions that could result in permanent vision loss. Most employers have a safety program and will provide you with the materials you need to get Osha approved eye wear. We are only given one pair of precious eyes so please follow your employers guidelines to ensure you can see the great days ahead of you!

With all of todays electronic technology and gadgets such as laptops, I-pads, notebooks, computer monitors, video games and cell phones; there are a lot more concerns with eye strain (electronic vision syndrome) and dry eye syndrome (DES). These syndromes can have symptoms of blurred vision, eye discomfort and redness. Here are a few suggestions to help alleviate these from happening to you.

1) Start with a comprehensive eye health exam to address your symptoms.
2) Proper lighting when on your electronic devices. What does your device recommend for bright day light darkness or working under florescent light.
3) Minimize glare. Flat screens are recommended. Wearing glasses with anti reflective coatings can also help with fatigue.
4) Blink more often. Approximately every 20 minutes blink or close your eyes slowly, like your going to sleep. Do this about 10 times and it will help moisten your cornea.
5) Excercise your eyes. Try to follow the 20-20-20 plan: look away from your device at something across the room for 20 seconds then look at an object close to you for 20 seconds and then back to your device 20 seconds. Repeat several times. This will also help your eyes accommodate (focus) from one object to another.

These simple tips are great for any age to practice-especially for children who will be working on electronic gadgets for many years to come.
