Give a warm welcome to the newest member of the START Team,

๐Ÿ“Margaret was born and raised on the island of Guam

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“ Degree in Athletic Training from University of La Verne in California, Masterโ€™s in Kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton where she contributed to concussion research, Physical Therapy Assistant degree from Cerritos College

โšฝ๏ธ She has worked with various national teams at the international level, including the Guam National Soccer Team and Team USA Artistic Skating.

Overall, sheโ€™s a badass and weโ€™re honored to have her on our team

We think of flexibility as a good thing but can it be too much?

In PT school, weโ€™re taught that range of motion is a โ€œthe more the betterโ€ situation.

Sure, having good mobility is great, especially if you have good control of it. But what happens when you dont?

Hypermobility can range from severe, like Ehlerโ€™s Danlos Syndrome, to having excessive range of motion.

The effect this has on your brain can be significant as the brain relies on sensing the body for good information to make decisions and move through space safely.

When your body isnโ€™t giving the brain good feedback through tension, the brain lives in a state of tension itself. Think fight-or-flight.

This can lead to all sorts of problems, tensions, and pains.

Ribcage position can change how the shoulder, neck and back works.

A forward ribcage increases compression throughout the body. Abs are off, back muscles are on, and shoulder mobility becomes limited.

This can help you push more weight but also drives up the nervous system to a more sympathetic, or fight-or-flight, response.

A retracted ribcage decreases compression, uses more abs while reducing back muscle recruitment. This usually means you wont be able to lift as much weight but also is more decompressive in nature, or more parasympathetic.

Too much of one thing is bad, even if that one thing is healthy for you

This is why there is no such thing as the perfect posture

Eat only salads and eventually a big mac becomes healthy

We need variability, we need options, we need diversity

Switch things up, have fun, and get moving
