One of the most commonly asked questions: “Will exposing my child to more than one language cause a speech and language delay?”

No! Research shows that exposing a child to more than one language can actually be beneficial to a child’s cognition, language development, and brain functions. 🤗

❗Keep in mind: Language delays can still occur in bilingual children, but bilingualism itself is not the cause.

Functional Language vs. Academic Language

🗣Functional language helps children communicate things that they need and want. Examples of words that help children to communicate functionally are core words, verbs, descriptors, and location words. These words are beneficial because children can use these words to make requests, make comments, and name things.

🔴 Academic Language includes colors, numbers, shapes, and letters. These are not as helpful for children to initially learn because they do not help children get their needs or wants met.

For example, it is more beneficial for a child to be able to communicate “need help” or “want ball,” than “red square” or “four”
