“I don’t see a client. I see my mom, I see my dad, just the joy of helping somebody.”

Francisca Uvah’s life has been defined by service. Originally from Nigeria, she built a career as a psychology professor, raised four grandchildren, and mentored incarcerated individuals before joining Home Instead at the encouragement of her family. Long before becoming a Care Pro, she volunteered driving seniors to meals and appointments simply to brighten their day.

Today, she brings that same tenderness into every home, treating each client like family and creating moments of music, laughter, and connection that stay with families long after her shift ends. This level of care is exactly why Home Instead recognized her as one of 10 Care Pros of the Year.

Joy believes care starts with seeing the person, not just their condition.

She would sit beside her client’s bed, read her books to her, and ask how she wanted to show up each day. By focusing on who she was—not what she had lost—Joy helped her rebuild confidence and identity. Over time, those small moments led to something bigger.

“You want each person to enjoy their day, no matter what their challenges are.”

After more than 40 years advocating for individuals with disabilities and helping families keep loved ones at home, Marie thought she had retired for good. But she missed the connection. In 2020, she joined Home Instead — and families are so glad she did.

Marie learned to count in Japanese so she and her client could do physical therapy exercises together, cheering at the end and even playing balloon volleyball (their record is 54 volleys!). Families call her a “walking angel” for the calm, creativity, and gentle humor she brings to those living with dementia or Parkinson’s.

Through music, crafts, movement, and meaningful connection, Marie helps every day feel joyful, meaningful, and full of dignity.
