Choice.

I think about this from a creation perspective and in my belief that we were given choices -free will -our own signature of being. Personally this speaks to the opposite of control and the beauty of humanity and relationships because when you chose it’s something you decide. I believe this is how God designed it because he wanted a real relationship where he gets our “yes”. Relationship in its purest form can’t be forced but has to be chosen. To me God is the creator of that framework from himself to humanity.

This also makes me think 🤔 about choice when we go to therapy or when we sit and unpack our inner world. It’s a vulnerable place to go but it’s also a sacred “yes” to feel-to be known -to invite -to witness etc.

As a therapist: I consider this choice for people to open up as sacred. They don’t have to. They don’t have to chose to do that with me. And as a therapist I think there is a very delicate line of being with vs charging forward. Informed choices are important but to know every human has choice is a part of dignity. Humanity. Respect. and autonomy. That’s the beauty of being a witness to people’s process. And although I can support even guide at times it’s always their choice. And to me that is sacred.

When someone trusts to open up it’s a choice.
When someone chooses to face things and let you see them it’s a choice. When we allow someone into our vulnerability it’s a choice.

That’s why I think that choice is sacred because it can only be made by the individual and who they are.

This has been running through my mind lately. Empathy -giving -being there for someone else -loving -sacrifice. These are all wonderful and courageous values and qualities. But when empathy is not grounded in truth it can become self abandonment. Truth can look like : where do I begin and end and where does another begin and end. What are my needs and boundaries ? Who do I want to be without Losing who I am? How do i view this myself and other with clarity and possibly curiosity if needed. Truth can also be a clear enough vision of other. When one can sit and hold these pieces honestly and also look at am I showing up love -empathy and truth or fear. We can be both fearful and empathetic and still make a Choice how to show up. But we can show up more from a place of agency than fear. It’s a process to figure it out and think each person will be different. But there’s something about holding onto self honestly while extending empathy to other so that empathy doesn’t create self abandonment without our entire permission.

The words “with you “ have been running in my mind these past few weeks. Recently I heard the pastor speak about why God wants to know our thoughts-emotions and inner being. If he already knows. Then why ? He proceeded to talk about how a parent might find out their kid got a good grade on their test but may check in and ask anyway or a parent may know a child has gotten news about the child being sad but will check in anyways. Why ? Because when the child is happy the parents wants to share with the child in their happiness. And when the child is sad the parent wants to share with the child in their sadness. There’s a parallel he drew there with even if God knows that he asks us to pray because he wants to be with us in all of it. I also think of my life as a therapist and that is one of the foundational pieces of sitting and listening and healing is “I am with you “. Unlike God or even a parent I may not know what a person is going though (not a mind reader lol) but creating a space and a message that i am with them is so critical to the work. I believe when people feel like their pain-fears -joy and hopes etc are “with another “ it can be less overwhelming, less scary, healing, liberating, integrating, etc. even though being with may mostly not mean experiencing exactly what another is going through it can be an open space from one humans heart-mind to another. “Im with you so these difficult and painful and meaningful places don’t have to be traveled alone and you will make it through this step by step.”

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is a book that is near and dear to my heart. In finding the integration of spirituality and sense of self this book does a great job in explaining and providing insights into that journey. Im so grateful for leaders that have been able to shed light, insight and guidance on this journey called life and to try to live more holistically with congruency, integrity, freedom and ,authentically.

Recently my friend asked me to talk about anger. Anger has been a complicated emotion for me to process and can still be at times. This book does a great job of incorporating the integration of hard emotions and how to process them through that spiritual lens. I love how we can be fully human and yet find so much depth and healing to our mind, hearts and souls in this life time. It fills my heart to know that this work can be truly meaningful and hard and so so beautiful.

Moments of beauty.

As a hsp we can often feel the overstimulation and overwhelm of the world
But we can also experience beauty very deeply. Warmth, joy, grounding, centered, awe-wonder, laughter, healing, peace, and connection. Many times when I am overwhelmed-overstimulated it’s more challenging to take in these pockets of beauty. Maybe together we can start noticing it and take it in even in the challenge. This is also why as a hsp Is very important to have enough time to deeply process what we need to and time to rest and
Recover. Truly savoring the beauty around
Is a true gift and filled with so much color. When I sit and do this I am filled with gratitude. (As these moments were all in the past month 🙂).
What about you ? What is something you want to pause and savor and take
In its beauty ?

Join us today for a conversation around Asian American and mental health. It’s at 530 pm and the zoom link is in the flyer. It’s free. These conversations are so neat and dear to my heart. As I often feel sandwiched between experiences of the the older generation and this generation mindset. It’s been enlightening to have conversations and even shows (I.e. beef) that may highlight these differences and gaps. My own more recent personal approach is to try to listen to where these messages and values come from from my older beloved generations as they are my roots and my culture but then to think through what I want to keep and let go with the information we have about attachment, sense of self and mental health. These conversations can hopefully continually be one more step in understanding and bridging that gap.

Recently I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time with my friends little girl. It’s refreshing to see glimpses of life through a child’s eyes.
The wonder and awe at things. The determination and excitement to walk and explore. And so much more. I also think of how we as adults we learn overtime what to do with our emotional world. I’m one sense it’s so great we can learn how to express and mAnage and organize and filter. And yet as I’ve been thinking about how Alive life can be through a child’s experience it reminds me how as we humans can be Alive and how those emotions often coexist.

Sadness and desire
Fear and risk
Grief and love
Doubt and courage
Anger and compassion
It reminded me that these experiences often can coexist and I wonder if that is just part of being an Alive human being.
