Sixty-five years ago, cardiovascular care took a significant leap forward.

On September 21, 1960, Dr. Albert Starr successfully implanted the world’s first artificial heart valve, developed in partnership with engineer Miles “Lowell” Edwards. From open heart surgery at age five to today, Kim’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and heart.

Born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart condition that makes it hard to get enough oxygen to the body, she underwent multiple heart surgeries throughout her childhood and adolescence. Years later, she needed a pulmonary valve replacement, and her cardiologist recommended with an Edwards Lifesciences transcatheter valve.

Now, Kim is back to doing what she loves and living life to the fullest. We’re so grateful to Kim for joining us at The in May and sharing her story. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what drives us every day: supporting patients with purpose and heart. ❤️
