Back and neck pain are among the most common medical complaints from both men and women, especially as they get older. Lots of issues can cause painful symptoms, including spine-related problems like spinal stenosis.

Stenosis is a narrowing of your spinal canal, the channel that carries your nerves from your brain to every other part of your body. When the canal narrows, your nerves can become compressed, causing persistent pain and other symptoms that can affect many everyday activities.

As many as a half-million Americans have symptomatic spinal stenosis, and many more men and women may have spinal stenosis in an earlier stage before symptoms become noticeable. Dr. Badday diagnoses spinal stenosis through a review of your symptoms, a physical exam, and diagnostic testing.

If you regularly play tennis, golf, or participate in other sports or activities that involve repeatedly moving your forearms this summer, it’s important to look out for symptoms of two painful sports injuries, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. As both of these conditions involve injury to the tendons in your arms, it can be difficult to differentiate between them.

What is Tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow occurs when you experience injury to the tendons surrounding your elbow, usually from repetitively moving your arm and wrist. This injury causes pain and tenderness in your outer elbow that sometimes radiates to your wrist and forearm. You might have trouble gripping or holding objects, turning doorknobs, and shaking hands.

What is Golfer’s elbow?

Similar to tennis elbow, a golfer’s elbow causes pain in your elbow and sometimes your forearm and wrist. The inner elbow pain occurs from injuries to the tendons in your forearm.

If you have a golfer’s elbow, you might also experience a stiff elbow as well as weakness, tingling, and numbness in your wrist and fingers. This injury is common in anyone who regularly uses wrist or finger clenching movements, which includes athletes such as golfers and tennis players.

If you have symptoms of either golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow, it’s important to come to Dr. Badday to get a diagnosis and treatment to prevent further injury (see link in bio). After making a diagnosis, Dr. Badday develops a specialized treatment plan to heal your injury.

Genetic testing looks for changes, sometimes called mutations or variants, in your DNA. Genetic testing is useful in many areas of medicine and can change the medical care you or your family member receives.

Genetic tests are done using a blood or spit sample and results are usually ready in a few weeks. Because we share DNA with our family members, if you are found to have a genetic change, your family members may have the same change.

Sports injuries can occur due to overtraining, lack of conditioning, and improper form or technique. Bruises, strains, sprains, tears in ligaments and muscles are all common sports injuries.

When an athlete suffers a sudden trauma or extreme soreness, it's often a good idea to rest your body for a few days. If the pain persists, it could be a signal that they've suffered a serious orthopedic injury that may need medical attention. In this case, waiting too long for the pain to subside or continuing exercise through the discomfort could worsen the injury.

Pain and inflammation in the hip joints are some of the main reasons that doctors prescribe steroid injections. Steroid injections contain two main ingredients. The first is a steroid (cortisone) that helps reduce inflammation. The second is a numbing agent or anesthetic that reduces pain.

In addition to relieving pain, steroid injections are sometimes used to diagnose pain. If the injection fails to provide relief, then your doctor knows that the source of pain is from somewhere other than your hip.

For people with severe pain, steroid injections may be a suitable short-term solution.

Your neck is made up of vertebrae that extend from the skull to the upper torso. Cervical discs absorb shock between the bones.

The bones, ligaments, and muscles of your neck support your head and allow for motion. Any abnormalities, inflammation, or injury can cause neck pain or stiffness.

Many people experience neck pain or stiffness occasionally. In many cases, it’s due to poor posture or overuse. Sometimes, neck pain is caused by injury from a fall, contact sports, or whiplash.

But in some cases, neck pain can indicate serious injury or illness and require a doctor’s care.

If you have neck pain that continues for more than a week, is severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms, schedule a pain management consultation with Dr. Badday to get a customized pain treatment plan. Visit https://www.drhasanbaddaymd.com/contactus
