🌟🎙️ I am a guest on a podcast once a month. That is what my schedule allows and this time, I was on Dr. Doni's "How Humans Heal podcast" to dive deep into the fascinating intersection of hypermobility and pelvic floor health.

If you've been struggling with hypermobility or pelvic pain, this episode is a must-listen! 🎧

Constipation is common among people with EDS or hypermobility for 2 reasons:

Dysautonomia which is the imbalance within the autonomic nervous system. This system is in charge of actions in your body that you dont have a control over. Things like bowel movement, digestion, heart beat, blood vessel constriction--- > you get the point .

Also, because of joint instability, pelvis and what are connected to it can be unstable, causing over contraction of the muscles inside the pelvis. That means constipation.

There is more to constipation than the diet. That is what holistic health and wellness are all about.

Biological Breathing practices --> so so important
Lifestyle and activities of daily living review and customized
Stability and functional mobility
Ergonomics
Sleeping habits
Supports and brace reviews and needs

Everything has to be fit to the individual and as a hypermobile person, you ought to take an interest in learning what sets you off more and how to have a control of your symptoms.

This is something everyone should be doing and the hypermobile person has more interest in because of pain!

Physical therapy can help with hypermobility BUT not all physical therapist knows hypermobility or how to treat hypermobile patients.

Not everyone in the world of rehab is a physical therapist; for instance I am a chiropractor that does rehab. and postural stability. There are occupational therapists that take an interest in treatment the hypermobile population.

Do your research and look for a provider who TREATS hypermobility. Knowing of hypermobility is NOT the same as treating it.

Foot and ankle issues are common with hypermobility with some of its related issues being things that you may not relate to your feet.

Foot and ankle issues can be:

Flat feet
Pain and fatigue in the feet and knees
Joint instability in the feet and lower extremities in general
Increased injuries from over use
Deformities
Callus formation
Decrease fat pad
Muscle weakness

Make sure to see a rehab clinician who knows how to treat hypermobility because with functional mobility and stability, many of these issues can be controlled.

When getting hypermobility therapy treatment, make sure you choose a provider who KNOWS how to treat hypermobility; you do not want to be the guinea pig to figure out what to do and what not to do!!

Watch part 2 to see what that looks like!

Popping your hips only does damage.

I know, I know, it feels good now but you are messing the ligaments even more.

The fix is stabilizing the hip, pelvis and back to work together as a compartment. This only happens with functional movement in the form of developmental exercises vs isolated exercises to 'strengthen' or 'stretch' an area.

Try this taping for De Quervains injury AKA gamer's thumb🎮️

18/05/2024

Taping provides sensory input to the brain so when it comes to doing it, we want to tape on the direction of fault- in this case, the back of the knee so every time you go into hyperextension, you get reminded.

17/05/2024

Here is how to tape the knees.

Remember taping is not for stabilization but for sensory cueing of the brain for better proprioception.

Proprioception relies heavily on the tensile contraction of the ligaments and with hypermobility that is not happening as much.

I find taping very helpful for my hypermobile patients and myself😉

Bending the knees back the other way is a very common presentation in hypermobility.

Other than the fact that the ligaments are loose, another 'feeder' of this problem is the fact that almost all hypermobile individuals stand with the pelvis WAY in front of the ankles so the only thing that keeps them balanced is the knees 🦵hyperextending!

Taping the knees is a good way to cue the brain to not go in the hyperextended knee position

but

mindfulness in movement has to be there for a while. Using the principles of movement is a huge player to succeed.

Puborectalis is the muscle that when tight can cause constipation.

Treating it by going inside the pelvis and expecting the problem to solve is an incomplete approach.

Find out why it was tight and how to tackle the why.

Keep chasing the why- not the incident but why the incident caused the issue. That is the holistic approach
