Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute

Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute An academic institute focused on scientific research and education in integrative medicine. We offer a combination of Western and complementary treatments.

The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine, rated one of the top 50 U.S. medical schools by U.S. News & World Report, is an academic center focused on scientific research and education in integrative medicine. The center offers Western allopathic integrative medicine as well as complementary treatments such as acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, massage, yoga and education. The center was established in 2001 with a generous gift of $5.7 million from Henry and Susan Samueli to take a leadership role in exploring the frontiers of complementary and integrative medicine. Growing interest in integrative approaches for maintaining wellness, preventing disease and treating specific illnesses created a need for such a center to conduct rigorous scientific investigations of the physiological effects of these treatments. Education in this field is also a high priority of the center. The medical community is becoming more interested in integrative approaches that embrace nonconventional medical interventions as part of medical treatment when they are supported by solid scientific research. The Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine is putting some of these approaches into practice. We also are working to educate both the medical and the lay communities about the benefits and risks associated with new approaches to the practice of medicine.

What does the future of integrative cancer care look like at UCI Health? Dr. Gary Deng spoke to Becker's Hospital Review about his bold vision for merging conventional oncology and supportive, whole-person medicine.

We were proud to welcome Dr. Deng as our director of clinical affairs in June. He is also serving as director of the Integrative Oncology program at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, in partnership with the Samueli Institute.

"Cancer cells do not live in isolation. Cancer needs to be treated at an organism, molecular and cellular level. I am very excited about the prospect that, with more study, we can define and delineate these factors to develop models that enhance whole-person cancer care. Potential implementation of these models can minimize costs while maximizing use in a clinical setting," Dr. Deng said.
