Hello BeLoved,
Are you the daughter of a mother who during your adolescent or young adult years appeared to treat your physique's evolving into a woman’s more as a threat than a rite of passage, as possibly evidenced by her competing with you -- copying your dress or hair styles, saying unfavorable things about your changing body proportions?
During past holiday gatherings, if you garnered measurably more positive attention from loved ones about your talents, your accomplishments, even what you were wearing, than your mother got, did she find a way to minimize or distract from what they were praising you about?
Or worse, did your mother retaliate, pummeling you with unkind words or inappropriate behaviors in private, or in later years, right in front of everyone else?
Did this ever result in your downplaying your strengths to those complimenting you if you were within earshot of your mother, in hopes of curbing her expected negative reaction?
On the other hand, did your mother at times have you demonstrate your developing talents to others whether you wanted to or not, because: she considered you an extension of herself and wanted acknowledgment from others; or she expected kudos for nurturing your gifts like a wonderful mother?
Have you found yourself consummately skilled at appeasing others to smooth ruffled feathers because you found it a valuable art form to prevent your mother from creating tense conflict or unnecessary drama with you, your siblings or even your father?
If ANY of these applies to you, you've suffered from the Rapunzel Complex. The good news is, the condition doesn’t have to be permanent!
