During Native American Heritage Month, we honor the strength, wisdom, and healing traditions of Indigenous communities. Recovery is most powerful when it is rooted in culture, connection, and community.
In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺, partners and team members share how traditional practices and modern treatment can work together to support long-term recovery. Andrew Williams, our director of Community and Belonging, highlights how culturally responsive care helps people feel seen, safe, and supported.

“I didn’t know the extent of my brokenness.”
That’s how Karl describes the moment he decided to seek help. After years as an elementary-school teacher, the pandemic's remote work demands and mounting stress spiraled into alcohol use, mental health challenges, and then crisis.

At Hazelden Betty Ford, through a model that treats both addiction and mental health together, Karl found something that finally worked. He learned to believe in himself again, built a toolbox for recovery, and is now training to become a counselor, so he can help others do the same.

His story is a reminder: healing isn’t just about stopping substance use. It’s about rediscovering who you are underneath. Read his full journey here: https://www.hazeldenbettyford.org/stories/tackling-addiction-and-mental-health

For the longest time in my life (before recovery), I needed to be right. I worked hard and campaigned to be right. Like so many things in my life before recovery, it was always about control—trying to control other people, what they thought, or how they thought about me. It was exhausting, for me and for anyone around me.

A recent MinnPost feature, “Needed: More centers that can treat teens for addiction,” underscores the urgent need for treatment options tailored to youth. In the story, Emily Piper, Chief Legal and Administrative Officer at Hazelden Betty Ford, highlights this national challenge:

“Because there are national gaps, people fly their kids in from all over the country to receive treatment and access to health care.”

Our Plymouth team continues to expand access and provide compassionate, specialized care to meet those needs. Through individualized treatment, family involvement, and a focus on long-term recovery, we are helping young people find stability, purpose, and confidence in their next chapter.

We grow when we learn to notice these kinds of moments. In our willfulness, we have often missed them before because we simply were not open to anything we weren't already looking for.
