On National Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Day, we celebrate our 1,022 SLPs across the Select Medical continuum of care, who help their patients with their speech, language and swallowing goals so they are able to re-engage their voice and safely return to eating a normal diet.

Across our network of specialty hospitals and outpatient rehabilitation centers, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a major part in helping patients achieve their recovery goals.

Within our hospitals, SLPs focus on dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) and cognitive communication therapy to assist patients who have communication challenges following a neurological condition like stroke or brain injury. In our outpatient locations, SLPs offer adult and pediatric speech and language therapy care to help patients regain function, develop skills and improve communication.

This month, we’ll be highlighting the significance of speech therapy within our continuum of care.

A brain injury can go unnoticed, which is why doctors rely on multiple tools to assess them. Imaging studies such as computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide detailed views of the brain and can reveal bleeding, swelling or structural changes. Early evaluation and testing is essential because it guides that patient’s treatment plan. Doctors ask questions to assess memory, attention and problem-solving skills. They also perform a full evaluation of the patient, while therapy teams look at movement, speech and daily skills to see how the injury is affecting life in real-time.

There are two types of brain injury — traumatic and non-traumatic — which stem from different causes. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are a disruption in normal brain function caused by an external force such as a bump, blow or jolt to the head often occurring in an accident, sports injury or fall. Non-traumatic brain injuries are damage to the brain caused by internal factors, such as illness or oxygen deprivation. Non-traumatic brain injuries are often considered a type of acquired brain injury and consist of strokes, tumors or cardiac arrest.

Using advanced diagnostic tools and patient evaluations, our rehabilitation hospitals determine the right path forward for each patient. Guided by physician-led multidisciplinary teams, every patient undergoes a full assessment and receives a customized treatment plan tailored to their unique needs. Read more below about how we help people regain their abilities and independence.

As summer activities pick up, so does the temperature. That's why it's essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a heat cramp.

These muscle spasms typically occur after excessive exercise in hot environments. They can be longer and more painful than regular cramps.

Prevention starts by remaining hydrated while exercising. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and limit vigorous activity outdoors on extremely hot days.

If experiencing pain that may be heat cramps, take these steps:

- Rest and cool down
- Drink clear juice or a sports drink with electrolytes
- Perform gentle stretching or massage to relieve pain

Call a doctor if cramps last longer than an hour.

Do not resume strenuous activities for several hours after the cramps have dissipated.

Knowing your limits will help keep summer fun and pain-free.

Summer create the perfect conditions for insects and the diseases they can carry. To help you and your loved stay safe, check out these tips.

Wear repellant outside to help avoid stings and bites.

Long pants and long-sleeved shirts can work as a great barrier from ticks and mosquito bites.

Avoid standing water in your yard, as mosquitos like to lay eggs there.

Check your skin and hair for ticks after you've been in the woods. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme and Anaplasmosis, both of which can have deadly consequences if left untreated.

If you do encounter any insect and appear to have an allergic reaction, seek treatment. Symptoms can include hives, nausea, fever or trouble breathing.

Have a safe and insect-free summer!
