If you’ve had a traumatic brain injury (TBI), drinking alcohol can seriously slow or impair your recovery.
What happens?
Slows brain healing: Alcohol interferes with neuroplasticity (your brain’s ability to rewire and heal).
Increases seizure risk: Drinking can trigger or worsen post-traumatic seizures.
Worsens sleep & mood: Alcohol disrupts deep sleep and can amplify depression or irritability.
Deepens cognitive issues: Memory, focus, and balance problems can worsen under the influence.
Adds brain stress: Alcohol increases inflammation and oxidative stress in already-injured tissue.
Raises re-injury risk: Impaired balance and judgment mean higher odds of another head injury.
If you’re healing from a TBI, alcohol isn’t your friend. Your brain needs time, oxygen, and rest, not toxins. Speak to your healthcare professional about safe ways to reduce or stop the use of alcohol.
