If you're going to SAEM, don't miss our newsletter editor, Satta Emeli's, Ignite talk! Telling Your Story: The Power of the Personal Essay for Physicians
Date: Wednesday May 14, 2025
Time: 3:00 PM-3:50 PM (All times are ET)
Location: Rooms 309-310: Level Three (Room assignments subject to change)

Summary
Physicians are habitual storytellers. From morning rounds to patient handoffs, we constantly narrate the events of our day, making sense of complex medical cases and human experiences. But how often do we reflect on the stories that define our own paths? The personal essay offers us the chance to turn our internal narratives into powerful, reflective pieces that explore the choices and challenges that shape our careers and our lives.
In this Ignite talk, we will explore how writing a personal essay can be a tool for reflection, resilience, and communication in the life of a physician. It is not just about writing—it is about uncovering the meaning behind our experiences and sharing our stories in a way that resonates with others. What makes a personal essay compelling? What makes it honest and emotionally impactful? And why should you consider writing one?
From the high-stakes moments in the emergency room to the quieter struggles in both our personal and professional lives, personal essays offer a powerful way to process our experiences and build emotional resilience. In 20 fast-paced slides, we will break down how to craft a persuasive, first-person narrative, drawing from examples of physicians who have used this medium to connect, inspire, and reflect.
This talk will inspire you to write and to share your story. Whether you are in the midst of training or an experienced practitioner, the personal essay can be a tool for growth, communication, and connection.
