Next Friday is our Butter Together program with Sarah Pratt. This is a free program to come and hear Sarah talk about her butter cow sculpting experiences at the Iowa State Fair. Attendees (all ages welcome) will get to sculpt with their own butter. Registration is required so we have enough butter on hand. The class is currently half full! Mrs. Wagner’s 3rd grade class spent part of their afternoon at the Lied Irwin Public Library. We read The Good Egg by Jory John to help promote our summer reading theme, “Plant a Seed, Read.” The kids had a great conversation about what it means to be kind and “good,” along with ways they can show kindness throughout their day.

Our activity was an egg drop challenge! The students worked in pairs to complete four different challenges. The first challenge was pretty easy; they could choose 5 items to help keep their egg from cracking. The second challenge became a little trickier with only 3 items and 8 inches of duct tape to work with. The third challenge allowed just 2 items and no tape at all. For the final challenge, students could choose 1 item, along with either a pipe cleaner or a wingspan of yarn.

Three groups of boys managed to have their eggs survive all 4 challenges and amazingly, we only had three broken eggs in the library! The students showed great teamwork, creativity, and problem solving skills while testing their designs.

The library would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to a generous patron for donating the complete Chief Inspector Gamache Mysteries series by Louise Penny to our collection.

This beloved mystery series follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec as he investigates crimes throughout Quebec, often centered around the small village of Three Pines. Known for their rich characters, thoughtful storytelling, and atmospheric settings, the books blend traditional mystery with themes of friendship, compassion, art, and human nature.

The series has earned international acclaim and is especially popular with readers who enjoy character-driven mysteries in the style of classic detective fiction.

These books are a wonderful addition to our shelves.
