Friendly reminder 💛
Kids don’t have to “master PECS” or demonstrate ANY prerequisite skills before getting a robust AAC system.
PECS can be a helpful tool for learning to request, but communication is about *so much more* than asking for things. Kids have thoughts, feelings, opinions, and jokes to share—and they deserve words for all of it from the start.
We don’t make speaking kids prove they’re “ready” for language. AAC users shouldn’t have to either.
Robust AAC gives kids access to real language so they can:

✨ connect with others
✨ express feelings
✨ grow their communication over time
AAC isn’t a reward and it’s not something to earn. It’s simply a way to communicate—and everyone deserves that.

This means that we work to find what our clients love and we use that to encourage improved feeding skills and optimal communication skills, rather than telling clients what to do and how to do it. This helps to foster independence and generalization of skills across contexts and environments. We believe that keeping client preferences and interests as well as their sensory, motor and cognitive abilities in mind during all sessions is critical to success.
