During vision therapy, we often ask our patients to try things in new ways and explore concepts that are completely new to them. Here are some positive phrases to lean on — words that encourage, support, and help build confidence every step of the way.

Give some ❤️ to some of our most recent graduates and read some of their stories:

☀️ Jaxon: “Before vision therapy he had difficulty with reading and writing. During therapy he improved in tracking and peripheral vision. His favorite part was the fun games with Sara! It can take time but keep going! We all learn differently and in our own time. The team is here to support you!”

☀️ Rocco: “Reading was hard, difficult to focus and it was hard to catch a ball. During vision therapy hockey and lacrosse got easier, reading got awesome and he started reading Harry Potter! His favorite part of vision therapy was Miss Sara! My favorite game was dot to dots and number popping out game in 3D.”

☀️ Teigan: Her therapist Diana wants to super congratulate T for all her hard work. She is super ambitious, willing to take on any challenge presented to her and always spoke positively to herself even when things were hard. I am going to miss seeing her every week!

☀️ Nina: My favorite part of vision therapy was playing games with Sara.

☀️ Also congrats to S.S.!

This past weekend our team helped perform 75 vision screenings for athletes during the state games at . It was a blast as usual! This was Dr. Katie’s 4th year as clinical director, and she was joined by Dr. Ashley and Ginger, Kelsey and several team members from our sister office alderwoodvtd.

Thank you to all of the SOWA staff and volunteers for making this happen!

☀️Rachel: “Before VT I experienced eye fatigue. I would be not sleepy and yet my eyes felt sooo tired. Most days I would massage my eye orbit muscles. I changed to audiobooks (no more reading for fun!) to save my reading stamina for work only. During therapy the eye fatigue doesn’t happen with work anymore and I’ve built up to 10 min a day of reading-for-fun. My favorite part was working with my therapist, Ginger. She’s the best. She keeps me on task and remembers all of the tidbits I’ve shared over 7 months.”

☀️Hashim: “Before VT my eyes were skipping lines. During therapy I noticed how my eyes endurance increased.”

☀️Avery: “Before VT I was going to OT and they told me I needed to come. For those who are beginning therapy now: You can do it!”

☀️Maxwell: His therapist LOVED working with him. He was dedicated and diligent, consistently doing home practice and zooming through the different levels.

☀️Stella: “Before VT I experienced double vision, I couldn’t see the board at school and had issues with reading books. During vision therapy, I noticed improvements in EVERYTHING. My favorite part was doing the 3d and working with Sara. For those who are starting, it’s fun. It can be a little difficult but if you are consistent you will see results.”

☀️Ilan: “Before VT I experienced attention issues, not reading at school, sensory struggles related to vision. I noticed improvements in visual tracking, getting more coordinated with activities like mazes, and improvements with OT goals. My favorite part was getting Pokemon cards and cat stickers!”

☀️Vibha: “My overall vision with respect to real life scenarios, like depth perception has improved during vision therapy. My favorite part was coming to the clinic and meeting Ms. Kelsey and getting my eyes fixed with fun games. Definitely get eye therapy. It has long term impacts and helps throughout your life’s adventures. It makes you confident and helps you tackle the world successfully.”

Also congrats to ☀️Hannah!

☀️ Eye Movement + sunshine + vision work = a powerful combo! These activities will support dynamic visual tracking (following moving objects), visual attention and focus, eye coordination and timing. Bonus: It’s relaxing and connects kids with nature while boosting their vision skills!

1. Smooth Pursuits ✈️ Watch a bird or airplane move across the sky with your eyes (not your head). This helps train your eyes to follow moving objects smoothly—important for reading and sports.

2. Peripheral Awareness Walk 🚶‍♀️🌿
Take a nature walk and try to notice movement or objects “out of the corner of your eye” while keeping your eyes focused straight ahead. This sharpens side vision and spatial awareness, crucial for driving and sports.

3. Bug Spotting and Tracking 🌸👀

Go outside and watch butterflies or bees as they flutter from flower to flower. Encourage your child to follow one insect with their eyes as it moves unpredictably, trying to keep their gaze steady without moving their head.

“How is vision therapy different from getting glasses?” Great question—and the difference is BIG!

Glasses help *you see more clearly* by correcting refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness. But vision therapy goes deeper. It helps train *how your eyes work together*—improving skills like tracking, focusing, depth perception, and visual processing.

So if your child has trouble with reading, skips lines, or complains of headaches—even if they wear glasses—vision therapy could be the missing piece.

Glasses correct *what you see*.
Vision therapy improves *how you see it*.

Show some ❤️ to some of our recent graduates from vision therapy and read about their experiences:

☀️ Ellie: “I had esotropia and lack of stereopsis. I noticed improvements during vision therapy in school. My favorite part was telling everyone who would listen about my week and seeing Dr. Tina and Dr. Ashley’s reactions when I improved at my check ins, and working with Ginger. For those who are starting, pay attention to your eyes and do the practice.”

☀️ Violet: “Before vision therapy she experienced difficulty writing, reading and staying focused and comprehension. During vision therapy she was excited about her new skills and we experienced so much joy and interest in reading after beginning therapy. Her favorite part was playing games and Ginger.”

☀️ Rory: “In gymnastics, mostly on the vault, it went double and I didn’t know what springboard to land on. Now I’ve learned to keep my eyes steady. I don’t go double on the beam or vault. My favorite part of vision therapy was playing Cat Tiles and learning how to control my crossing eyes.”

☀️ J.B.: “Before vision therapy I experienced uncomfortable questions from classmates, and a short attention span. Now images are more in focus and my classmates help remind me to use both eyes. My favorite part of vision therapy was improving my eyes while doing fun activities. It is worth going to the sessions.”

☀️ Olivia: “Before therapy I had blurred words when reading, unclear pictures/objects, and a weaker eye compared to the other. I had improvements in eye teaming, seeing all angles of my vision, and words became more clear. My weaker eye improved a lot. My favorite part was getting to know everyone (they’re such nice people!) For others who are beginning vision therapy now, it’s not as long as it feels and just commit!”

Also congrats to ☀️ Lacey ☀️

People with convergence insufficiency often have vision problems when they do close-up activities, like reading or using a computer. The most common symptoms are:

Tired or sore eyes
Blurry vision
Double vision
Headaches
Trouble concentrating
You may also have trouble reading. You might lose your place, read slowly, or feel like the words move or float around on the page.

Parents and teachers might think kids with convergence insufficiency have trouble reading or learning — but it’s actually a vision problem that needs to be treated.

Convergence insufficiency happens when the nerves that control your eye muscles don’t work the right way. Vision therapy helps the brain learn to control and coordinate both eyes. Exercises help retrain the nerves to aim the eyes properly. We are here to help!

The temperature is dropping and it’s easy to cozy up indoors with a new book or movie. But did you know outdoor time is beneficial for our kids’ eyes year round? More outdoor time is linked to reduced myopia (nearsightedness) in kids and we love outdoor play for continued visual-motor development.
