I was lucky enough to have Dr. Bruce Lipton the father of Epigenetics as a guest professor when I was in Chiropractic College. Dr. Lipton is the author of “Biology of Belief” which I would consider one of the two three most influential books that I have read in my entire life.

I have so many patients that come in to see me and say my heart condition is hereditary because my dad and my grandfather both died of heart attack. This does not have to be your fate. Heart disease is a chronic lifestyle disease which means you are able to determine with your lifestyle whether or not you develop heart disease. Genes are expressed based on a signal from your environment. For the most part in our modern world you get to control your environment. You can break down your environment into three categories; How you Eat, How you Move and How you Think. Heart disease like all of the chronic lifestyle diseases develop when you do not provide what your body requires to express health and on top of that when you provide to your body toxic food, sitting and thoughts. Change your lifestyle and change your health expression. Change your health expression and change your gene expression!

Having your weight balanced over both feet equally is critical to your body's function, how you walk, how you hold yourself up, the stress on your joints and literally whether you are susceptible to wearing down prematurely.

Here are a couple of examples of some of the body imbalance issues that show up in my office:

A patient with right knee pain that has not responded to other treatments but shows up in my office with 30% more weight on the right foot when standing still. What this means is that their postural breakdown is contributing directly to their knee problem and often re-balancing their body over center allows the right knee to heal.

A patient post left hip replacement surgery with 20% more weight bearing down on their left foot and has struggled to respond as suspected post surgery and even post rehab. What happens to all trauma to the body is that it goes into contraction and a surgery is a trauma regardless of whether it is necessary or not. Contraction and gravity work together to cause compression and compression of a post hip replacement joint is not what you want in order for it to heal.

Bulgings discs in the lower back can be extremely painful. Lumbar bulging discs can cause lower back pain, sciatica, numbness and tingling in the leg, weakness in the leg, foot drop and much more.

I have a lot of patients with bulging discs that have come to me for help and as long as I can help them get down on my adjusting table I can work with them. The care that I deliver is designed to decompress the entire body and by releasing the tension in the spine and pelvis is often very effective at giving patients relief even on their first visit when they come in with a bulging disc.
This is not to say that all bulging disc problems can be helped completely by the care I deliver, however due to the gentle nature of what I do and the worries that many patients have about surgery, drug therapy and injections they often want to try the most non-invasive work first.

Getting healthier and healing almost always require a change in environment in order to occur. This seems to be one of the biggest problems for most of my patients and I would assume for patients in general. Sitting, slouching, inactivity and a poor diet all lead to disease.

If a new patient starts care with me for lower back pain and sits all day at a computer and does not change their sitting habits then it will be really difficult for them to heal.

If a patient has high blood pressure and the only change that they make is to take a medication for it then all they have done is reduce the blood pressure medicine to reduce blood pressure on the cuff. High blood pressure is caused by stress, that stress can come from what you eat, how you move or don’t move and how you think, meaning your mental and emotional stress. Those need to change if a patient wants to become healthy and the added health produces a lower blood pressure reading which is very different from taking medication.

My job as doctor is to help my patients understand what is causing their problem and help them with any part that they cannot do fully on their own but then also and more importantly teach them what they can ‘DO’ in order to add health and remove the stresses their lifestyle has created.

The upper neck, or upper cervical spine is critical to your health. The majority of motion in your neck occurs in the upper neck with the rotation at the atlas vertebrae responsible for about half of the entire rotation ability of the neck.

When a joint is highly mobile it has to sacrifice some stability. This makes the top of the neck more vulnerable to injury. The upper neck is frequently misaligned, illustrated by a study on newborns from Germany that showed that 80% of babies in the study had a misaligned or subluxated upper neck from the birth process.

This cannot be taken lightly as every single nerve in the spinal cord has to travel through the upper neck to communicate with the rest of the body. This is why upper neck subluxations can be devastating to your health causing problems such as:

Headaches, neck pain, elevated blood pressure, fibromyalgia, torticollis, migraines, facial pain, numbness and tingling, chronic fatigue syndrome, seizures, and much more. Make sure your upper neck is clear from subluxation!

One of my favorite things in practice is working with people for years. I have so many patients that originally came in for a serious problem that massively affected their lives and then once their original problem was resolved they continue to work really hard to stay well.

One of the most important things that my ‘veteran’ patients can learn to do is to recognize when they have gone out of alignment but before it becomes a big problem. Here are some common things that my patients have recognized as signals that they are in need of an adjustment in between scheduled appointments:

Waking up stiff and sore with no apparent reason.
Restless sleep.
A time period of heavy stress.
Their walking or running gait feeling ‘off’.
Recovering from a recent cold or flu.

Slowing down, chilling out, meditation, whatever you need to do to escape from a hectic stressful life is really important. I walk my dogs first thing in the morning around 5am when no-one else is around. We take our time and I get myself going for the day. I am able to think about my goals for the day, what needs to be done, what I’d like to get done and get some fresh air at the same time.

This is a classic chiropractic quote from The Developer of Chiropractic BJ Palmer. It is as true today as when he first said it in the early days of Chiropractic. Why does one person get sick and another does not. What is the difference between two people that are exposed to the same environment yet have very different health outcomes. All the best scientific journals in the world agree that a huge majority of our disease and death are related to our lifestyle. Heart disease, stroke, most cancers, and almost all chronic diseases have a massive lifestyle component to them.
This is excellent news though as we are able to control our environment by changing our lifestyle. We can drink more water if we don’t get enough, we can start to walk every day if we sit too much. We can stop smoking, we can stop eating junk food and we can take measures to minimize our mental and emotional stresses.

My morning coffee is butter coffee. I do really well with a very low carb diet and I can stay in a fat fueled state with my butter coffee. Yes the caffeine helps me get going but the fat from the butter allows me to stay with fat burning and helps prevent carb cravings.

There are so many good things in grass fed butter that are worth pointing out here. 1. Grass fed butter has lots of great saturated fats, yes saturated fat is healthy. The dangerous fats come from seed oils like canola, soy, corn, etc. 2. Grass fed butter has good omega-3 fat which are essential for your body. 3. I am asked by my patients all the time about why they need to come back again to get adjusted, why do I not stay in alignment?

What people do outside of my office after they are adjusted is put themselves back in the same environment that helped to create and sustain their physical postural and spinal breakdown.

· Take opportunities every day to get up from sitting. Try not to sit more than 30 -60 minutes at a time without getting up to move. Even walking around for 2 minutes out of every hour will actually stimulate your brain to work more efficiently and break you away from the compression that occurs to our bodies when we sit.

· Twisting your spine is the most energetically stimulating movement to feed your nervous system so try to twist your whole body around in one direction to a comfortable stretch and hold it for 20 seconds and then do so on the other side. You may be surprised by how good it makes you feel.

· If you are feeling particularly ambitious then do push-ups, sit ups or squatting up and down will keep your body active and create energy for you during your workday.

The precise spinal corrections that I make at The Balanced Spine require specific postural measurements of the pelvis, spine, shoulders, neck and head along with a weight differential measured at the feet. All of these measurements combine to help me determine which side of the body I will adjust first and if I need to work on both sides as well. The greatest thing about the work that I do is that measurements after each portion of the adjustment help me understand how the body changed and what further changes need to be made and how I go about the next part of the adjustment.

It is like playing golf, you tee off on a hole and then size up your next shot based on where your fist shot landed. Unlike golf the number of shots that I take don’t really matter as the only thing that matters is that I finish the correction to the proper balance point every time. Hole in one or double bogey doesn’t matter.

Sciatica is extremely painful and for some people debilitating.
Sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve is irritated or inflamed from a problem in the lower back or deep muscles of the buttocks.

Sciatica is too common a problem and can arise from an acute injury to the lumbar spine or pelvis, disk herniation, piriformis syndrome or spinal subluxation complex.

Sciatica almost always requires treatment and treating the cause with chiropractic care has been found to be the most effective form of care according to the consensus scientific research.
If you have pain and or numbness that travels down the back of your buttocks and anywhere down the back of your leg even down to your toes you may have sciatica.
