Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common in young adults. In fact, chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial STI in this age group, and many infections have no symptoms at all.
When symptoms do occur, they may include unusual discharge, burning with urination, pelvic or testicular pain, sores, or abnormal bleeding—but waiting for symptoms isn’t recommended.
Screening is advised at least once a year for sexually active individuals, regardless of the number of partners. More frequent testing may be recommended with new partners or higher-risk exposures.
Routine testing helps prevent complications such as infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and ongoing transmission.
Testing is confidential, straightforward, and focused on prevention and early treatment.
Sexually active students should plan for routine STI screening as part of their annual healthcare which can be done when they are home from college or at the student health center on campus.
