Starting a new school year, or a new school entirely can be exciting, but it can also bring anxiety, uncertainty, and stress.

Teens may not always express their worries directly, but you might notice signs like irritability, withdrawal from activities, changes in sleep or eating habits, or a drop in grades and motivation. Encourage open conversations, predictable routines, and time for rest and connection. Let your teen know it’s okay to feel overwhelmed during big transitions and give them some tips on how to cope.

If you need some coping skill tips, call our office today to schedule an appointment with one of our pediatric trained providers.

As your medical home, we know your child’s history and can often provide same-day guidance or visits for issues like fevers, coughs, ear pain, or minor injuries. Unlike urgent care, we offer continuity and follow-up and often save you the time and cost of unnecessary visits.

We’re your first stop for both reassurance and medical support.

Call us first when your child isn’t feeling well. We’ll guide you on next steps and we’re always happy to help 24-7.

Flu season is right around the corner and the best time to protect your family is now.

We’re offering flu shots in-office and at our upcoming flu clinic to make it easy and quick for your child to get vaccinated.

The flu can cause serious illness in children, especially those under 5 or with chronic conditions. Getting vaccinated helps protect not only your child, but also your community.

Is your teen heading off to college? Are you unsure what they do for health care during this transition?

College students get sick, stressed, and overwhelmed too, but knowing when to call our office versus when to see the student health center can be tricky. It’s usually best to call us for things like questions about chronic conditions, annual wellness care, or help with medication refills. If they’re dealing with symptoms like fever, sore throat, stomach issues, or minor injuries, they should head to the student health center.

Encourage your college student to save our number in their phone and reach out if they’re unsure.

We’re here to support your child, even from a distance.

Sometimes called “walking pneumonia,” Mycoplasma pneumonia is a bacterial infection common in school-aged children.

It often starts like a cold but lingers with a dry cough, low-grade fever, fatigue, headache, and sometimes mild chest discomfort. Because it spreads easily in classrooms and close quarters, it’s something to watch for if your child’s cold symptoms just won’t go away.

A typical viral cold will improve after day 7, and resolves completely within 3-4 weeks. A bacterial infection such as mycoplasma, typically worsens after day 7 or causes fever to last more than 5 days.

Persistent mycoplasma usually requires antibiotics, so if your child has had a cough for more than a week that is worsening or they develop fever after day 5-7 of an illness, give us a call. We strive to get your sick child in for a same day visit.

Provider tip: For children over age 1, Dr. Kischnic recommends giving 1 teaspoon of honey for their cough every 4 hours as needed. No need for nasty tasting cough medication!

Did you know that 1 in 7 women experiences postpartum depression (PPD)?

It’s more than just “baby blues”- it can include intense mood swings, sadness or hopelessness, difficulty bonding with your baby, or changes in sleep, appetite, and energy. Some parents also experience feelings of guilt or emotional disconnection.

At pediatric visits, we don’t just check on your baby, we check on you, too. That’s why we screen for postpartum depression regularly at your baby’s well visits through 15 months of age by using a validated questionnaire that may be completed online or in person.

If you are struggling, please reach out to our office today so we can help plug you in with community resources and trusted adult providers.

Hormonal changes, stress, and growing independence can all contribute to mood swings during the teen years.

Occasional irritability, frustration, or sadness is normal, but if your teen’s mood changes are extreme, persistent, or affect daily life, it may be time to check in.

During well visits and as needed, we screen for signs of depression and anxiety to help identify emotional concerns early.

Are you concerned about your teen’s emotional health? Call WellBeing Pediatrics so we can help you decide if further support is needed.

A balanced lunch helps kids stay focused and energized throughout the school day. Aim to include a protein (like turkey, beans, or cheese), a fruit or vegetable, a whole grain, and a healthy fat.

Don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated. Small portions of treats are okay, but try to limit sugary drinks and processed snacks.

Here is a fun snack that you can include in your child’s lunchbox this school year:

No-Bake Peanut Butter Energy Bites

Ingredients:
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup natural peanut butter
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed or chia seeds
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:
1) Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl.
2) Stir until well mixed.
3) Roll into small 1-inch balls.
4) Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

These bites are packed with protein and fiber—perfect for lunchboxes or after-school snacks!

Allergy note: You can substitute sunflower seed butter or almond butter if needed.

If your newborn’s eye is watery or has a bit of discharge, it may be a blocked tear duct. A blocked tear duct is a common and usually harmless condition. Most clear up on their own by 12 months.

To care for the clogged tear duct, gentle pressure in the corner of the eye 2-3 times a day with a warm rag can help.

Signs of infection could include redness of the white part of your newborn’s eye or redness and swelling of the eyelid.

Unsure if your newborn has a normal clogged tear duct or if it is infected? Call WellBeing Pediatrics today to schedule an appointment with one of our pediatric trained providers.

Feeling nervous about the new school year is normal for both kids and parents.

Some worry is expected, but if your child experiences trouble sleeping, frequent tummy aches, or major clinginess, it could be anxiety. Start routines early, talk openly about their feelings, and validate their concerns. Small steps like visiting the school beforehand and letting them pick out fun items off their school list can make a big difference.

What’s your child most excited (or nervous) about for the new school year?

Share below – we’d love to hear from you.
