Meet Naomi Fisher, one of our extraordinary Overnight Home Health Aides at Bridges Cornell Heights!
About Naomi
Naomi has been an integral part of the Bridges Cornell Heights family since joining us in August 2017. Working behind the scenes through the night, she ensures our community runs smoothly while many of us are asleep. Her dedication and commitment to excellence make her an invaluable asset to our team.
Background & Personal Journey
Naomi’s journey in caregiving began during high school when she enrolled in the CNA class at TST BOCES. Her passion for the field was undeniable, and she excelled under the guidance of her teacher, Mrs. Honer. “I really loved that class, and I kept my grades up because I enjoyed it so much. Mrs. Honer was an excellent teacher,” Naomi recalls.
Inspired by her experience, she continued with the Home Health Aide (HHA) program, where she discovered her true calling, providing care in a home setting. “I fell in love with it. I loved the idea of taking care of people in their homes,” she shares.
“Mrs. Honer saw my hard work and dedication. She called Bridges Cornell Heights and told Elizabeth about me. Elizabeth had me come in for an interview.”
Though the schedule didn’t line up at first, Naomi stayed persistent.
“A year later, I called Elizabeth back and said, ‘Hi, this is Naomi. Do you remember me?’ She said, ‘Of course,’ and I told her I was ready to work overnight. She said, ‘Great, I’ll have you come in for orientation.’”
Why She Loves What She Does
Naomi’s decision to work overnight shifts was motivated by family needs, particularly ensuring her son was cared for during the day.
“What motivates me to work overnights is my son. My fiancé worked during the day, and we didn’t want a babysitter. It was hard, but I made sacrifices.” Though she originally planned to switch to day shifts once her son started school, life had other plans. “He needed me during the day, so I continued working nights. Looking back, I’m glad I made that decision because I’ve been able to be there for him while still doing what I love.”
Despite the challenges of balancing work and family, Naomi’s positivity never wavers. “Sometimes it’s really hard because I’d rather lose sleep than not be there for him. But when I leave my house to come to work, I leave all my personal life at home. I come in with a smile every day and a great attitude.”
Naomi’s approach to caregiving is rooted in kindness, patience, and respect. Her typical evening begins by checking on residents, counting medications, and attending to anyone needing immediate care. She finds genuine joy in assisting residents and making their nights comfortable.
“I love when we work together because when you let the resident help you help them, everything goes nice and smooth. I always say, ‘Thank you for letting me help you...’ and it makes them feel good.”
Naomi has been an HHA for more than 15 years.
“I can definitely say I grow every day. I love what I do, and it shows.”
