We believe that curiosity never retires and that lifelong learning is vital for fostering social connections and promoting cognitive health. At Kendal at Ithaca, residents have numerous opportunities to pursue and facilitate lifelong learning. One popular option is the monthly CAPE (Cornell Academics & Professors Emeriti) lecture series held on our campus. This month, residents enjoyed a presentation by Jim Cordes, the Feldstein Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University, titled “Gravitational Waves: A New Window on the Universe.”

What began as a casual conversation among three residents reminiscing about the soundtracks of their past has grown into an unofficial “pub singing” group. Today, the trio has grown into a lively group of about twenty, and from what we can tell, their main goal is simple: to have fun!

Due to popular demand, this fall, there are now two sections of the Kendal Memoir Writing group led by Lynda D. Bogel, a retired Senior Lecturer from Cornell’s Department of Literatures in English.

Lynda explains that “adding the additional section helps keep the numbers small enough to offer places for trust and sharing of life stories, and to discuss one another's tales. While they meet for just one hour a week, they write daily and share writings ahead of class, so that in class, residents can respond with appreciation, questions, and suggestions.”

Over time, the group has been guided by different leaders and has been drawing Kendal writers for several years. Lynda notes that “prompts are used to inspire creative approaches to exploring pieces of their lives, participants write short and longer vignettes of great variety.”

In fact, one of the earlier writing groups compiled their stories and published a book titled "Narrating Our Lives." It's exciting to think about what the next group might achieve!

✨ Meaningful work happens every day at Kendal at Ithaca. ✨

Sometimes, it’s the smallest moments that mean the most—like a resident pausing at the end of a meal to say, “Thank you for taking such good care of me today.” For our dining team, that simple expression of gratitude is a reminder that their work isn’t just about serving meals—it’s about making someone feel valued, cared for, and at home.

At Kendal at Ithaca, we believe job satisfaction comes from knowing that what you do truly matters. 💜

What could be better than a heart-shaped sunflower? A heart-shaped sunflower with a bee! This photo, taken a few years ago in the Kendal Community Garden, is a favorite. The garden is more than a place to grow fruits and vegetables—it’s a special space where community flourishes and friendships take root.

Meet Sailor, a fluffy new resident at Kendal at Ithaca. Sailor is a ten-year-old Collie who loves his new home. He brought his friends, Jane and Mel, who say that Sailor "defines what it means to be low-energy." His favorite part of the day is lounging on the couch and looking out the window. While he hasn't visited the dog park yet, it's on his list of places to explore, but first, he is looking forward to napping on the porch when the weather cools down.

You're a good boy, Sailor
